Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage.

To understand how Americans think about things, it is necessary to understand “the point.” Americans mention it often: “Let’sget right to the point,” they will say. “My point is …” “What’s the point of all this?”

The “point” is the idea or piece of information that Americans suppose is, or should be, at the center of people’s thinking, writings and spoken comments. Speakers and writers are supposed to “make their points clear,” meaning that they aresupposed to say or write clearly the idea or piece of information they wish to express.

People from many other cultures have different ideas about the point. Africans traditionally tell stories that express the

thoughts they have in mind, rather than stating “the point” clearly. Japanese traditionally speak indirectly, leaving the listenerto figure out what the point is. Thus, while an American might say to a friend, “I don’t think that coat goes very well with therest of your outfit,” a Japanese might say, “Maybe this other coat would look even better than the one you have on.”

Americans value a person who “gets right to the point.” Japanese are likely to consider such a person insensitive if not rude. The Chinese and Japanese languages are characterized by vagueness and ambiguity. The precision and directness

Americans associate with “the point” can not be achieved, at least not with any grace, in Chinese and Japanese. Speakers ofthose languages thus have to learn a new way of reasoning and expressing their ideas if they are going to communicatesatisfactorily with Americans.

1.According to the passage, Americans expect speakers and writers to ______.A)be clear about their main ideasB)give as much information as possibleC)express their personal viewsD)be honest about their true feelings

5. In order to communicate with Americans satisfactorily, speakers of Chinese need to _____.A)learn the language wellB)change their way of thinking

C)be careful about their choice of wordsD)explain their reasons clearlyTask 2

Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage.

In the United States today, a large group of people want a college education.

However, everyone is not able to attend a four-year college. Many four-year colleges are already too crowed. To give morepeople a chance to get a college education, some cities and towns have built junior colleges.

The junior college offers a two-year course of study in a wide range of subjects. It prepares some young people to go on to afour-year college. It trains others for jobs in business, government, or industry.

Because junior college are built in cities, they can serve the many people who live in a large community. Many students cannot afford to go to a four-year college. But they can save enough to go to a junior college. The entrance fee at a junior collegeis low. Students can also save money by living at home.

A junior college admits some high school graduates who would not be accepted at other schools. The four-year college turnsdown students whose high school grades are low. The junior college will often admit a student who might do well taking atwo-year course.

One of the goals of our country is to educate as many people as possible.

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage.

Do you have bright ideas? Ideas for inventions that change society or, at least, make life easier for somebody? Perhaps weall do sometimes, but we don’t often make the idea a reality. Recently, in Britain, there was a competition called BritishDesigners for Tomorrow. The competition encouraged young people to

carry out their bright ideas. There were two groups in the contest: Group One was for schoolchildren under 16; Group Twowas for schoolchildren over 16. And there were eleven prize-winners altogether.

Neil Hunt, one of the prize-winners, was called Sunshine Superman by one newspaper writing about his design. It’s

important when people study the weather to be able to record sunshine accurately. We need to know how many hours ofsunshine we have and how strong it is. Most sunshine recorders only record direct sunlight. Neil’s is more accurate and thisis very important for research into the ways of using solar power. With his prize of 100 pounds, Neil plants to carry oninventing.

You can do so much with animation. Look at Simon West’s idea for animated road sighs. He uses pictures which appear tomove as you go nearer to or farther from them. This isn’t a new idea. But it is new to use these pictures on road signs. “Wefound that people were more likely to see moving signs,” said Simon. So now, you can really see rocks falling, trains moving, horses galloping or a car falling over the edge of a cliff. Quite a warning!

The ideas in the competition were so inventive that we are surprised that British industry doesn’t ask more schoolchildren forsuggestions. Perhaps this will be the start of “pupil power”!11.______ was carried out recently in Britain.
