The idea that red means stop and green means has influenced our lives in more ways than just traffic signals. We have been taught from a young age that the color red means danger and (信号)green means it's okay to move forward. But why were those colors chosen for traffic lights in the first place? For something we have to look at every day, why couldn't they have been prettier colors?
Well, it's important to know that before traffic lights for cars, there were traffic signals for trains. At first, railway companies used red to mean stop, white to mean go, and green to mean warn. As you could imagine, trains ran into a few problems with white meaning go. For example, one train mistook a bright star for a white light and something unexpected happened. Because of that, railway companies finally moved green meaning go and used yellow to mean warn. And it's been that way ever since.
Red has always been a color that mean danger, long before cars were even around. This most likely started because it's the color with the longest wavelength(波长) so it can be seen somewhere farther than other colors.
But, believe it or not, yellow was once used to mean stop. Back in the 1900s, some stop signs were yellow because it was too hard to see a red sign in a poorly lit area. Finally, highly reflective materials(高反射材料) were developed and red stop signs were born. Since yellow can be seen well at all times of the day, school zones(区域, 范围), some traffic signs, and school buses continue to be printed yellow.
So next time you are impatiently waiting at a traffic light, don't get so mad at them, they've certainly come a long way.
48. What were traffic signals for before traffic lights for cars? A. Trains B. Boats. C. Planes D. Bicycles 49. Which of the following colors meant go at first? A. Red. B. Yellow. C. White. D. Green. 50. What does the text mainly tell us? A. How important traffic lights are. B. Which color has the longest wavelength. C. What red, yellow and green can be used for. D. Why traffic lights are red, yellow and green.

The Silk Road(丝绸之路) is the name of different roads that long ago connected Europe, Africa and Asia. People reached these different places along these roads. Scientists believe people began to travel the Silk Road about 3000 years ago. By the time the Chinese silk trade(丝绸贸易) became important in the world. The Silk Road covered almost 6500 kilometers. It went from Rome to China, which is from the West to the Far East.
Merchants travelled along the Silk Road to carry silk, of course. They also carried and traded other things like spices (香料), cloth, jewels and gold.
Along and around these ancient path(小路), have come many fascinating and mysterious(迷人且神秘的) stories. It is said that Roman soldiers who lost a war travelled through central Asia. They decided to live somewhere near the ancient Chinese villages. Some of these Romans married local Chinese women and the legend(传说)of the blond-haired, blue-eyed tribes(部落) of China was started.
Some historians believe that the people of Kashmir were taken away from their country Israel. They were prisoners (俘虏) of war almost 2800 years ago. People say that these people travelled along the Silk Road. They kept their Jewish way of life for a long time.
During its busiest period, the Silk Road allowed people from many different cultures and countries to meet each other and mix. The Silk Road allowed the sharing of valuable things and new ideas. It included people and trading goods(货物) from different areas. All these peoples travelled the Silk Road. And they shared goods, stories, languages, and cultures.
In modern times, the old Silk Road routes (路线) are still used, but now they are crossed by trains instead of camels and horses. There is even silk route museum in Jiuquan in China. It has over 35, 000 objects from all along the Silk Road. In this way, China protects the history of many countries and peoples. They keep doing business along the old Silk Road routes.

After that, we went on down the river. It was very dark that night and it wasn’t easy to see where we were going. Suddenly, a big steamboat came at us very fast, and the next minute it was right over us. Jim and I jumped off the raft (木筏) into the water. The boat hit the raft and went on up the river.
When I came up out of the water, I couldn’t see Jim anywhere. I called out his name again and again, but there was no answer. “He’s dead!” I thought.
Slowly, I swam to the side of the river and got out. I saw that I was near a big old wooden house. Suddenly a lot of very angry dogs jumped out at me. They made a terrible noise and someone called from the house, “Who’s there?”
“George Jackson,” I answered quickly. “I’ve fallen off a river boat.”
Well, the people who lived in that house were very kind, and they took me in and gave me some new clothes and a good meal. I told them that my family were all dead, so they said I could stay with them as long as I wanted. It was a beautiful house and the food was good there, so I stayed.
A few days later one of the slaves in the house came to me and said, “Come with me!” Together, we went down to some trees by the river. “In there!” he said and went away.

It is most difficult for parents to decide whether to have a second child or not.
It is often heard that a single child is likely to be a lonely child. There are no other children in the family for the child to talk to or play with. An only child is not able to get along well with children of his age. Some parents feel sad about making the decisions to have only one child. But the number of parents choosing to have only one child is increasing in many parts of the world. In the US, for example, more than14 percent of women between 18 and 34 plan to have just one child. The same can be seen in the UK. In Japan, the average(平均) number of children born per family had gone down to 1.42 by 1996.
For some single-child parents, especially who are busy working every day, time and energy seem to be overwhelming. They don’t have enough time and energy to share with more children. For other people, money is their first consideration. Many couples in Japan choose not to have large families as the cost of supporting a child up to the age of 18 reaches around $160,000. 51. According to the passage, why is a single child likely to be lonely? A. Because his parents don’t love him. B. Because he doesn’t have holidays.
C. Because he doesn’t have a brother or a sister to talk to or play with. D. Because there are other children in the family.

Argentina in the late nineteenth century was an exciting place. Around 1870, it was experiencing an economic boom(经济繁荣), and the capital, Buenos Aires, attracted many people. Farmers, as well as many foreigners from Spain and Italy, came to Buenos Aires looking for jobs. These jobs didn’t pay well, and the people felt lonely with their new life in the city. As the unhappy newcomers mixed together in the poor parts of the city, the dance known as the tango came into being.
At the beginning the tango was a dance of the lower classes(阶级). It was danced in the bars and streets. At that time women were fewer than men, so if a man didn’t want to be left out, his only choice was to dance with another man so that he could attract the attention of the women. In Europe at this time, strong interest in dance from around the world was beginning. The interest in international dance was especially strong in Paris. Once there was a man traveling in a faraway village. As he was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped. He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and didn’t try to get away. “Well,” the trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they still believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can hold them, so they never try to break free.”

Do you know why different animals or pests have their special colours? Colours in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.
Some birds like eating locusts(蚱蜢),but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts change their colours together with the change of the colours of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But as the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they have to hide themselves for lives and appear only at night.
If you study the animal life, you’ll find the main use of colours is protecting themselves. bears, lions and other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be seen by hunters. This is because they have the colours much like the tree.
Have you ever noticed an even more strange act? A kind of fish in the sea can send out a kind of very black liquid(液体) when it faces danger. While the liquid spread over, the enemies cannot find it. And it immediately swims away. So it has lived up to now though it isn’t strong at all. ( )51. How can pests with different colours from plants keep out of danger?

Even in early time, people could realize the importance of dreams and knew that dreams gave meaning to life. Every great achievement has been the result of years of dreaming. If a person has a dream and holds fast to it, he or she will find a way to bring it into reality (现实).
Children do not have much experience or knowledge. However, they are natural dreamers. We should not laugh at them for being naive. Many great men were dreamers when they were children. One such dreamer was Thomas Edison. He used to be ostracized (排斥) when he was in primary school, but his achievements were greater than everyone else’s in his time.
Teenagers and young people should also be encouraged to dream. The world is full of successful teenagers and young people. They dreamt big and their dreams changed their lives and even the world. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates are the good examples. They have developed technology and brought great progress (进步) to human besides making money for themselves.
Older people should believe that it is never too late to dream and that human mind is never too old to make dreams turn into reality. Colonel Saunders realized his dreams at the age of 67 and set up the biggest fried chicken company (KFC) in the world.
To dream is a wonderful ability which can lead to wonderful results. Olympic records were broken by players who were brave enough to dream. No one is too young or too old to dream and to make dreams come true.

A. their dreams are natural
B. they are greater than everyone else

Nearly half of elementary and high schools in the US use the Presidential Fitness Test. It checks kids’ fitness levels. Students are tested at least twice a year. In 1956, US President Eisenhower created the test, and it has been a tradition in schools since 1966.
There are five activities in the test: sit-ups(仰卧起坐), push-ups(俯卧撑), sit and reach, endurance run or walk and shuttle run(折返跑). Students who get scores at or above 85 percent on all the activities can get a Presidential Physical Fitness Award.
The test encourages students to live a healthy and active life. Students taking the test are really testing their limits, according to the US National Association for Sport and Physical Education.
China has a similar test: the physical education(PE) test. Beginning at the age of 7, students in China are tested twice a year to check if they are healthy and strong. They also finish activities like the endurance run, sit-ups and the shuttle run.
However, unlike students in the US who get awards, Chinese students get points in PE tests. The highest score is 100. For junior school students, the PE test is more important because it is worth 30 to 40 points in the entrance exam for senior high school. In order to get a good score, most students begin to prepare for the test in their junior one year.

Every morning, the newspaper chief editor (主编) holds a meeting with the reporters. They discuss the main events of the day. Reporters are then sent to cover (报道) the events.
As soon as the reporters know what to write about, they get down to work. They telephone people and fix a time for a face-to-face interview with them. Sometimes they do telephone interviews. Checking information is very important. They go to the newspaper’s own library to look up any information that they need. This is called “doing one’s homework.”
At the same time, the picture editor decides which photographs will be used for the next day’s paper. All the people who work on a newspaper must be able to work fast. Reporters have to stop working on one story and start working at once on the important new one. They must find out the new information as quickly as possible. Later in the day, everything is put together at the new desk. Reporters return, type their stories into the computer and hand them to the editor.
The chief editor decides which will be the most important story on the front page. Sometimes this will have to be changed if something more important happens late in the day. Other editors read the stories which the reporters have written and make any necessary changes.
Finally, there is no more time left for adding new stories, and the time for printing the newspaper has come. This is done on fast-moving printing machines. A group of reporters asked a group of 4-to-8-year-old children this question, “What does love mean?” The answers were surprising. The children would answer like they did below.
Rebecca --- age 8 “When my grandmother hurt her knees , she couldn’t bend (弯腰) over and paint her toenails (脚趾甲) any more. So my grandfather would do it for her all the time, even when his hands hurt, too. That’s love.”
Samantha --- age 6 “Love is when someone hurts you, and you get so mad but you don’t shout at her because you know it would hurt her feelings.”
Terry --- age 4 “Love is what makes you smile when you’re tired.”
Bethany --- age 4 “I let my big sister pick on (捉弄) me because my Mum says she only picks on me because she loves me. So I pick on my baby sister because I love her.”

A group of swans flew down to a beach where a crow (乌鸦) was jumping around. The crow watched them with disdain (轻蔑).
“You have no flying skills at all!” he said to the swans. “All you can do is to move your wings. Can you turn over in the air? No, I don’t think you can do it! Let’s have a flying competition. I’ll show you what real flying is!”
One of the swans, a strong young male, took up the challenge. The crow flew up and began to show his skills. He flew in circles, performed other flying tricks, and then came down and looked proudly at the swan.
Now it was the swan’s turn. He flew up, and began flying over the sea. The crow flew after him, making all kinds of comments (评价) about his flying. They flew on and on till they couldn’t see the land and there was nothing but water on all sides. The crow was making fewer and fewer comments. He was now so tired that he found it hard to stay in the air, and had to struggle(挣扎)to keep himself from falling into the water.
The swan pretended (假装) not to notice, and said, “Why do you keep touching the water, brother? Is that another trick? “
“No,” said the crow. He knew he had lost the competition. “I’m in trouble because of my pride (自大) ! If you don’t help me, I’ll lose my life...”

Stonehenge, a rock circle, is not only one of Britain’s most famous places but also one of its greatest mysteries(谜). Every year it receives more than 750,000 visitors. People like to go to this place especially in June as they want to see the sun rising on the longest day of the year.
For many years, historians(历史学家) believed Stonehenge was a temple where ancient leaders tried to communicate with the gods. However, historian Paul Stoker thinks this can’t be true because Stonehenge was built so many centuries ago. “The leaders arrived in England much later,” he points out.
Another popular idea is that Stonehenge might be a kind of calendar. The large stones were put together in a certain way. On midsummer’s morning, the sun shines directly into the center of the stones. Other people believe the stones have a medical purpose. They think the stones can prevent illness and keep people healthy. “As you walk there, you can feel the energy from your feet move up your body,” said one visitor. No one is sure what Stonehenge was used for, but most agree that the position of the stones must be for a special purpose. Some think it might be a burial(埋葬) place or a place to remember ancestors(祖先). Others think it was built to celebrate a victory over an enemy.
Stonehenge was built slowly over a long period of time. Most historians believe it must be almost 5,000 years old. One of the greatest mysteries is how it was built because the stones are so big and heavy. In 2001, a group of English volunteers tried to build another Stonehenge, but they couldn’t. “We don’t really know who built Stonehenge,” says Paul Stoker. “And perhaps we might never know, but we do know they must have been hard-working — and great planners!” 51. What do most people think was Stonehenge built for?
A. Ancient leaders built it a temple to communicate with the gods. B. It might be a kind of calendar to tell people the summertime. C. It can prevent illness and make people feel energetic.
D. It must be for a special purpose because of the position of the stones. 52. What aren’t people interested in about Stonehenge?

One day, I took an underground to work, I saw something that made me very sad. On the tube( underground in London), a mother kept looking at her phone screen and playing a game with her daughter sitting beside her. The little girl, about 5 years old, was talking to her mother about her day, repeating the next stop's name cheerfully, praising her mother's long nails--trying to catch her mother's attention. Her mother just nodded and answered \"Mm, hm\" with her eyes glued to the screen, busy passing the levels of the game. I watched the girl give a final try to at least get her mum to look at her, but it was no use. Then the little girl turned silent. It was a shame the mother didn't notice that.
It broke my heart and got me wondering--what kind of game would make the mother forget she has the most beautiful thing in the world, the human she created, the person she loves with all her heart? What it meant when she couldn't look into her daughter's eyes and even stop to listen to the girl?
Some parents are almost like the teenagers, always on their phones with mindless games or going through Facebook. Perhaps parents have many things to deal with, but sometimes they are everything to their kids.
This is not a isolated example. I've seen too many such examples. I might not be a parent myself, and probably still have a long way before becoming one, but I know what I saw isn't right.
The scene used to be seen among teenagers very often when parents complained(抱怨) how their children were crazy about their mobile phones. Look how the situation has changed! The parents have become \"technology slaves\"(奴隶), that is to say, they can't control themselves while using mobile phones. Now some middle-aged parents hold the best iPhones or Samsung phones, which are probably the only two brands they know. They are playing the simple games with so expensive mobile phones. I'm uncertain whether to laugh or to cry. But my hope is that this storm passes.
Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. The girl failed to catch her mother's attention. B. The mother felt sorry after her daughter turned silent. C. The writer has much experience about being a parent. D. Middle-aged parents know many brands of mobile phones. 55. The underlined word \"isolated\" in Paragraph 4 means____________ .
A. spreading fast B. happening once C. increasing quickly D. appearing suddenly 56. In the passage, the writer mainly wants to express_____________ . A. the worries that children are crazy about mobile phones B. the happiness that parents are now able to use modern technology C. the sadness that the best smart phones cost parents too much money
17
D. the hope that parents use new technology like smart phones properly 57. What's the best title of the passage?
A. Middle-aged parents B. A scene on the tube C. Technology slaves D. Mindless phone games 45 B 46 D 47 C 48 C 49 D 50 D 51 D 52 A 53 B A 55 B 56 D 57 C

Almost every Chinese person can recite the two lines of the famous poem, “Every grain on the plate comes from hard work.” But sadly, many of us don’t actually get the real meaning of these lines: Don’t waste food.
A CCTV program, News One Plus One, reported that the food Chinese people throw away every year is enough to feed 200 million people for a year.
Do we have too much food? Of course not. According to the UN World Food Program, there were 925 million hungry people around the world in 2010, especially in developing countries. Six million children die of hunger every year.
Chinese people are well known for being hospitable(好客的) and generous. Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food on the table.
Luckily, a number of people have realized the importance of saving food. Last November, Li Hong, a waitress in a restaurant in Nanjing, got fired because she took some leftover food home for her son. Many people stood by her side and criticized(批评) the waste of food.
What should we do in our daily lives to waste less food? Here are some tips:
1. Do not order too much in a restaurant. Only order as much as you want to eat. If you cannot eat all the food you ordered, take the rest of it home.
2. Don’t be too picky(挑剔的) about food. Some food may not taste great, but your body needs it. 3. Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don’t buy too much, especially for vegetables and fruit.
45. What’s the real meaning of the underlined sentence?
A 春种一粒粟, 秋收万颗籽。 B 谁知盘中餐, 粒粒皆辛苦。 C 吏禄三百石, 岁晏有余粮。 D足蒸暑土气, 背灼炎天光
46. How many people were hungry in the world in 2010 according to the UN World Food
Program?
A. 200 million. B. Six million. C. 925 million. D. 625 million. 47. What does the writer want to show us through Li Hong’s story?
A. Many Chinese restaurants waste a large amount of food.
18
B. Many Chinese people are kind-hearted and ready to help the weak. C. Chinese people feel that they lose face if their guests eat all the food. D. Many Chinese people don’t agree with the behavior of wasting food. B
Every year thousands of people get hurt or die when they are crossing the road. Most of these people are old people and children. Old people often get hurt or die because they can’t see or hear very well. Children usually meet with accidents because of their carelessness. They forgot to look and listen before they cross the road.
How can we lessen (减少) traffic accidents? All of us must obey the traffic rules. For the drivers, they shouldn’t drive too fast. If they drive too fast, it will be very difficult to stop the cars in a very short time. For the pedestrians (行人), it’s very important to be careful when they are walking on the road. Therefore, when we walk across the road, we must try to walk along the pavements. We must stop and look both ways before crossing the road. Look left first, next look right, then look left again. Only when we are sure that the road is clear, we can cross it. The right way to cross the road is to walk quickly. It’s not safe to run. If people run across the road, they may fall down. Teens should try to help children, old people or blind people to cross the road, and never play in the street.
48. Which of the following is NOT the right way to cross the road?
A. Stop and look both ways. B. Run quickly. C. Make sure that the road is clear D. Walk quickly.
49. Why do most old people often get hurt or die when they are crossing the road?

The Smallest Life Around Us
Tiny plants and animals live all around us. We cannot see them because they are so small, but they are everywhere.
They live in the soil, the air, and in rivers and oceans. They grow on mountains and in caves. Some live in the ice at the north and south poles; some live where it is very hot. They are found throughout cities and in the country. They grow on other plants and animals. Some are even living on you, on your skin, hair, and inside your body, in your mouth, nose, and all through your intestines(肠).
These tiny plants and animals are called microbes. The word microbe is made from two other words: micro, meaning small, and bios, meaning life. So, microbe means small life.
Microbes have been on earth for a very long time. They may have been the first forms of life
19
to be alive. Today there are more microbes in the world than all other living things.
People did not know microbes had existed(存在) long. They were too small for them to see. But people did see many changes in their world—important changes. And they did not know what caused them. They saw food that they kept too long change color and begin to smell bad. They saw cuts and wounds grow red and painful and become infected(感染). They saw old plants and leaves and trees crumble apart on the forest floor and disappear into the soil. Such changes were a natural part of the world, but people did not understand them. They did not know these changes were evidence of tiny plants and animals growing all around them. 51.Why couldn’t people see microbes? A. Because they are too small.
B. Because they live inside our body. C. Because they live far from humans.
D. Because they may have been the first forms of life to be alive.

Each year there is an rising number of cars on roads and streets as millions of new cars are produced. One out of every six Americans works at putting together the parts of cars, driving trucks, building roads or filling cars with gas (汽油). Americans won’t live without cars!
Most Americans find it hard to think what life would be like without a car. However, some have realized the serious problem of air pollution by cars. The polluted air is harmful and dangerous to health.
One way to get rid of (除掉) the polluted air is to build a new kind of car. That’s what several of the large car factories are trying to do. But to build a clean car is easier said than done. Progress in this field has been slow.
Another way is to take the place of the car engine (发动机) by something else. Engineers are now working on some new cars. Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a practical model that pleases man.
To prevent the world from being polluted by cars, we’ll have to make some changes in the way many of us live. Americans, for example, have to cut down on the number of their cars. They
22
are encouraged to travel and go to work by bike. Riding a bike is thought to help keep the air clean.
But this change does not come easily --- a large number of workers may find themselves without jobs if a car factory closes down. And the problem of air pollution would become less important than that of unemployment (失业).
Although cars have brought us a better life, they have also brought us new problems. 48. The writer wants to tell us that ______.
A. Riding a bike is the only way out B. The number of cars must be cut down C. Man won’t live without cars
D. Cars bring us not only a better life but also serious problems 49. Which fact does the passage provide?
A. About one sixth of American workers are working in car factories.
B. The best way to get rid of air pollution is to change the car engine by something else. C. It isn’t easy to change the way of life in the USA.
D. In the USA, bikes will surely take the place of cars in the future. 50. Which is the best title for the passage? A. A New Way to Get Rid of Polluted Air
B. Cars and Polluted Air C
Every year, thousands of students choose to study in another country. More than 30 percent of these students go to the United States. Around 15 percent go to Italy, and 10 percent go to both England and Germany. A little less than 10 percent go to Australia, and around 5 percent go to Canada.
No matter where a student chooses to study, there are some things universities around the world need. First, all students must graduate from high school before they can apply (申请) to a university. Most universities also need some kind of test for students to enter the university. Universities in the United States, Australia, and Canada usually need some kind of standardized (标准化的) exam, such as the SAT in the United States. Students who do not come from English-speaking countries also must take a test such as the TOEFL in the United States and Canada to show they know enough English to study in English. England and Australia require students to take the IELTS.
In most countries, students must apply to each university they hope to go to. However, students applying to universities in England can use one form to apply to six universities at one time through the British Council (英国文化学会). Many students like this because it can save them a lot of time and money. For universities in other countries, students must fill in different forms for each university and pay a fee (费用) with each application.

Many years ago, I lost all of the hearing in one of my ears suddenly. At first, I thought it was just a small problem and I didn’t notice it. But two days later, after taking the medicine, my hearing still didn’t return. Soon after, my doctor told me I had a brain tumor (瘤). The tests later made me feel tired and I would spend more time alone. That time gave me a chance to work on my favorite hobby—art.
I spent most of my time in college studying art, wishing for a way to mix technology (技术) into my work instead of just using computers as a tool. As a girl who liked drawing, it was impossible for me to do technical work and be an artist.
But later, I took a course in computers and loved computers for the purpose of art. As my body fitted in its new changes after the operation, I began doing small experiments at night: drawing, making models, and studying how computers work. I was afraid if anything happened to my other ear, I wouldn’t be able to communicate. I paid more attention to the physical objects. I began building objects to help stop possible disasters that would influence communication in our society. I’ve met many challenges. They had more to do with what people think of my work and of me than anything technical, however. I was once told people didn’t believe that the projects really worked, and people don’t believe me, either.
Despite this, I’ve learned many things during this whole process. The most important is that we have to create our own chances. We should try to turn something bad in our life into something good. We have to make time for hard work and trust ourselves. We must never give up. . The writer studied hard at art in college in order to .

These days' experiences, like many other things, are becoming increasingly expensive. One has to pay a lot to get them. Even an ordinary (普通的) one.
Not long ago, I wanted to invite my friends to a lunch. What we really needed was a good and quiet place for a talk, not a big meal. So I chose one and told my friends to go there.
After I ordered, I was asked whether I would eat a 100 yuan or 200 yuan lunch. I said. \" 200 yuan.\" I didn't realize until I was asked to pay after lunch that \" 200 yuan\" means \" 200 yuan for each person\".
There were five people that day, and all of us were surprised by the 200 yuan lunch meal. The bill came at last: it was 1,260 yuan. The 1,000 yuan for the five of us, plus the money for drinks, fruits and air conditioning. I paid the bill without a word.
What could I say? It was not their fault(过错). It was my own fault that made me pay the largest bill in my life.
However, it was not so bad: we had a good lunch and at a quiet place. Besides, the experience will help in later years.

Everyone has got two personalities the one that is shown to the world and the other that is secret and real. You don't show your secret personality when you're awake because you can control yourself, but when you're asleep, your sleeping position shows the real you. In a normal night, of course, you often change your sleeping positions. The important position that best shows your secret personality is the one that you go to sleep.
If you go to sleep on your back, you're a very open person. You normally trust people and you are easily influenced by new ideas. You don't like to make people unhappy, so you never express your real feelings. You're quite shy and you aren't very confident.
If you sleep on your stomach, you are a person who likes to keep secrets. You worry a lot and you're always easily becoming sad. You never want to change your ideas, but you are satisfied with your life the way it is. You usually live for today not for tomorrow.
If you sleep on curled up (蜷缩), you are probably a very nervous person. You have a low opinion of yourself and often protect yourself from being hurt, so you are very defensive. You're shy and you don't usually like meeting people. You like to be on your own.
If you sleep on your side, you have usually got a well-balanced personality. You know your strengths and weaknesses. You're usually careful. You have a confident personality. You sometimes feel worried, but you don't often get unhappy. You always say what you think, even if it makes people angry.

“One father is worth more than a hundred schoolmaster,” Britain poet George Herbert once said. Bill Gates, the world’s richest man, agrees.
When he was a little kid, Gates was silent and hated to talk with others. He spent most of his time alone—reading books and thinking. To help his son, Gates’ father held family meetings and let him play simple games with family members. “These activities seemed silly but they improved my leading and working-together abilities,” Gates said later.
While mothers offer a more gentle kind of love, fathers teach qualities like independence(), confidence, courage and adventure(冒险). Children learn these things from their fathers when they play sports or games together.
British scientists showed that children who grow up without their fathers may have many problems. They may not have enough courage for facing difficulties, may be shy and worried or may even commit crimes (犯罪).
A caring father can help children get along well with others. Fathers not only lead their children into social circles but also teach them how to behave and control their feelings. Moreover,

Paul was a rich young man. When his father died, he left Paul a beautiful forest manor(庄园). Unluckily, before Paul could sell it for a lot of money, a lightening strike caused a fire that destroyed it. Watching the beautiful green trees turned into ash(灰烬)overnight, Paul felt his heart break.
In order to bring back the forest manor’s beauty, Paul tried to borrow money from a bank. But the bank refused him, for the bank didn’t believe he’d pay it back. Then he felt too frustrated to eat or drink. So he hid in his room for days. His wife was worried about him and suggested he take a break outside.
Paul went for a walk. When he turned the first corner, he saw a store with a huge group of people. It turned out that the housewives were waiting in line to buy charcoal(煤炭)used for winter heating.
Then Paul’s eyes lit up. He ran home and paid some charcoal workers to change the forest’s burnt trees into charcoal.
As soon as his charcoal went on the market, it was sold out quickly. Soon, he sold more than 1,000 boxes of charcoal.

One day I went to a store with a list. “Excuse me,” I said. A lady with glasses looked up, saying, “I’m Miss Bee. Come closer and let me look at you. I want to be able to describe you to the police if something is missing from the store.”
“I’m only a little girl, not a thief !”I was surprised. “But I think you’re potential (有可能的) ,”she said. “I need these,”I said, holding up my list.
“So what? I am not a person who works for you. Go to get them.”she said.
The store was a puzzle to me. It took me two hours to find everything on the list. “That packet of beans is only 29 cents, but you asked me for 35 cents.” I corrected her. She didn’t seem unhappy, just looked at me over her glasses.
The following summer I visited Miss Bee some times a week. She always found ways to fool me. Or shortly after I remembered the places of something on the shelf, she arranged (重排) the shelves again and made me hunt for them again. By the end of the summer the shopping trip that had once taken me an hour was done in 15 minutes.
One morning I was to get a packet of chocolate.“Miss Potential, what did you learn this summer?she said.“That you’re a meanie (刻薄鬼)!” I answered angrily. But she laughed, “Well, I believe my job is to teach every child I meet life lessons to help them. When you get older, you’ll be glad our paths crossed!”Glad I met Miss Bee? Ha! It was absurd. Until one day my daughter said,“Could you finish my math problems for me?”“How will you ever learn to do it yourself if I do it for you?”I said. Suddenly, I was back at that store where I had learned the hard way to check my bill. Now I have known what Miss Bee did for me. She is my good teacher.
