Once Popular Sports in Ancient Capital Xi'an
The ancient capital Xi'an in Northwest China's Shaanxi province is holding the National Games. As the capital of 13 dynasties throughout Chinese history, the ancient city has never been far from sports. Starting from the Western Zhou Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty, the city has held many sports events.
Cuju: Origin of modern soccer
Cuju was an ancient Chinese competitive game involving kicking a ball through an opening into a net. As the ancestor of soccer, it first appeared in the renowned ancient Chinese historical work Zhan Guo Ce(“Strategies of the Warring States”), which describedCuju as a form of entertainment among the general public. Later, cuju was commonly played in the army for military training purposes, during the Han Dynasty.
Jiaodi: Chinese-style wrestling
Sumo, known as Japan's “national sport”, actually started in ancient China. Sumo was called jiaodi or jiaoli in ancient times. Ancient jiaodi,a Chinese-style wrestling, was performed by athletes wearing ox horns and wrestling with each other imitating wild oxen. During the Sui and Tang dynasties, jiaodi was highly favored by emperors. In the Tang Dynasty, jiaodi was part of military training and a kind of entrainment and athletic sports.
Jiju: Ancient polo
Jiju is a sport which uses a stick to hit balls while riding on a horse, pretty similar to modern polo. It was popular in the royal court and among common people in the Tang Dynasty. There were many fields for playing polo in the court and it was also a major military training program in the army. In the Tang Dynasty capital, there were formal polo courts, such as the stadium pavilion in Chang' an palace.
Archery
During ancient times, the origin of archery was closely related with hunting and defense. Ancient archery was not only an athletic event,a military training program, and an entertainment activity, but also part of education. As early as in Zhou Dynasty, the archery

He was there every morning, sitting motionless on the front steps of his house. In the morning light, I could see the shadows that were etched (蚀刻) deep within the lines surrounding his eyes.
Each morning I walked this route with my daughter to her kindergarten class. We were new to the neighborhood so that I didn’t know many of my neighbors. On one beautiful autumn morning, as we passed his house, my daughter called out to him, “Hi, Mr. Man!” Always the outgoing child, I wasn’t surprised at her enthusiasm. But her cheerfulness soon faded when the man didn’t look at her and say “Hi” back.
As we continued on our walk to school, my daughter asked why the man didn’t want to say hi to her. Because I didn’t have an answer, I said simply, “Maybe he is having a bad day.” later I knew that Bob lost his wife in a car accident.
A few days later, as we approached Bob’s house on our way to school, my daughter called out “Hi Mr. Man!” and as usual, he didn’t respond. But then she ran onto his front lawn and picked up a beautiful red autumn leaf. She continued up one step and handed it to him. I held my breath.
As she skipped back to me, she said, “See you tomorrow, Mr. Man!” This time, he

In a recent study, researchers burned scented candles (香薰蜡烛) in several rooms — ranging from a small bathroom measuring 6 by 6 by 9 feet to a living room measuring 15 by 15 by 9 feet — and then used special instruments to determine what was released into the air. They found that while some cancer-causing chemicals were produced, the highest levels measured after four hours of continuous burning were less than half as high as the recommended indoor air quality limits set by the World Health Organization.
This led the study authors to conclude that under normal conditions, scented candles won’t pose any health risks. It’s important to note that only a small number of studies have

looked into the health effects of burning scented candles. And most, including this one, were conducted by researchers sponsored by the candle industry, but health authorities have claimed that the authors findings are solid.
“When candles burn, they release chemicals in relatively insignificant concentrations,” said Pamela Dalton, a researcher at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia. “The amount of unpleasant materials produced in general is on the order of a few parts per million or even parts per billion, which is like pouring a teaspoon’s worth of a chemical into an Olympic-sized swimming pool.”
“Exposure to chemicals released by scented candles is so low that they pose no significant risk to human health,” said Nikaeta Sadekar, an expert with the nonprofit Research Institute for Fragrance Materials.“Even the highest users of scented candles are not putting themselves at any considerable risk of harm.”
According to Dr. Dalton, humans can detect a pleasant smell at very low concentrations. “We’ve been told that we’re at the low end of the animal kingdom in terms of being able to detect various smells. That’s just not true,” she said. “Our nose can often smell things in the air even when they are barely there. When we smell something, it just smells strong. We tend to automatically assume that what we’re breathing represents a high concentration. And very often that’s not the case.”
8.What did researchers do after they burned scented candles? A.They removed some cancer-causing chemicals. B.They used instruments to clean the air for hours. C.They checked to see which one lasted the longest. D.They measured air quality in rooms of various sizes 9.What does the author tell us about the study’s conclusion? A.It has been supported by officials. B.It is based on unsponsored research. C.It may be misleading for the candle industry. D.It goes against findings from previous studies. 10.Which statement would Dalton and Sadekar agree with?
A.It is a bit risky to burn scented candles in small rooms B.Some new types of scented candles are cancer-causing C.It is quite safe to use scented candles on a regular basis.

D.Burning scented candles won’t produce unpleasant materials 11.What did Dalton say about human sense of smell?
A.It needs to be improved. C.It has been generally poor.
Transport is undergoing a massive transformation so it can meet society’s demands for a low- carbon economy. Introducing electric vehicles (EV) and declining gasoline use are helping, but zero-carbon hydrogen can speed up both the transition (转变) and long-term decarbonization of transport.
In the US, transportation produces the largest share of all greenhouse gas emissions (排放) in the economy at 29%, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. More than 90% of transport fuel is petrol based, but if more vehicles used hydrogen, emissions of this kind would plummet.
However, hydrogen is not considered an ideal replacement for gasoline as an engine fuel for cars because it is harder to store safely. And while fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) that turn hydrogen into electricity can compete with EV performance-and even out-compete them on range and refill time, extra energy is needed to produce the hydrogen needed for fuel. Also, finding investment for storage, pipelines and fuel stations is still a challenge for many nations.
Currently, governments worldwide are backing green hydrogen projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in heavy industries like freight (货运), steel, and energy storage. But hydrogen transport will need rapid production methods to create the fuel needed for the world’s road fleet.
Thankfully, research is advancing all the time. Nanoscale (纳米级的) thin films are applied to improving the chemical process to rapidly harvest hydrogen from the seawater. The same technology has been successfully used in solar power devices with higher efficiency-to-cost rates. Since hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe and as seawater makes up about 96% of all water on Earth, there is a virtually limitless supply.
Even wastewater and solid waste can create green hydrogen. Researchers at Princeton University are using sunlight to separate hydrogen from industrial wastewater. Chemical plants that currently face high costs for cleaning wastewater could transform it into clean hydrogen supplies.

Would it surprise you to learn that the vast majority of adults—around 75 per cent—tell up to two lies every day? 16 Why people lie
Over 20 % of lies are told in a bid to avoid other people; 20 % are jokes or pranks; 14 %are told in self-protection; 13 % are attempts to make a good impression; 11 % are told to protect others; and 9% are for personal gain.
How to spot a liar
So, are there any body language giveaways that can help “out” someone who’s lying? Back in 2015, University of Michigan researchers identified some common behaviours among liars, including grimacing(作怪相), looking directly at the questioner in order to appear trustworthy, or looking to the right, and overcompensating by gesturing with both hands. 17 .

18 Vocal factors can offer a good clue, too. People who are being deliberately dishonest—or who lack certainty in what they’re saying— tend to speak slower and place less emphasis on the middle of words, according to a previous study.Interestingly, the researchers also found that listeners automatically registered these voice changes as a sign of dishonesty, even when they weren’t being asked to do so.
It’s important to remember though that none of these pointers offer undeniable evidence that you’re dealing with a liar. 19 How to cope with a liar
Instead of accusing someone outright of lying, try “fact-checking” what they’re saying by asking lots of questions. Deceptive people generally can’t provide specifics and their tales start to unravel(解体). Catch someone out in this way, which at least kickstarts a more honest conversation.
20 If a friend fakes a headache because they’re afraid you’re going to be angry with them for cancelling a night out, it probably requires a heart-to-heart, rather than an argument. Or ask yourself if you’ve ever done a similar thing to them, and if you have, let it go.
A.What liars sound like B.What liars would say
C.After all, some people just grimace more or speak slower than others. D.Examine the motive for the lie and remember it pays to pick your battles. E.But if you’re dealing with a repeat offender, it’s time to rethink the relationship. F.That's according to a recent US study where 630 participants were asked to keep a “daily deception(欺骗) journal” for three months.
G.A more recent study found that liars may unconsciously imitate the body language of those around them while their brains are otherwise engaged in telling lies.

The Gift of Kindness
Will, a nine-year-old boy, was such a kind soul that he brought home birds with broken wings. Money was very short for his family because his mother was ill. Every weekend, Will would mow his neighbors lawns to earn a little money.
One hot dry morning, on his way to school, Will saw a man sitting on the roadside with his head in his hands. Not far away was his truck. Previously, the man spared no efforts in repairing it, but he failed, exhausted and thirsty. Will came up to him, ready to help.
Hearing Will’s greeting, the man raised his head, looked at Will and asked for some water. Learning that he had even not had breakfast, Will walked into a shop, fingering the money in his pocket. Eventually, he picked up sandwiches and water. They cost all his money! He shrugged, walked back and handed him the food.
The man received the supplies gratefully and they shared the brief meal while introducing themselves. Allan, a boss with a small factory who delivered goods by himself, smiled,” The delivering job is so tiring that nobody seems to want it. By the way, thank you for your food. I’m sorry that I forget to take money with me today. I’ll..”
“It’s OK. My mom always says we should be kind to the world, and the world will be kind to you!” Will shrugged, “As for the job, don’t worry. There must be someone wanting to take it.”
“Perhaps. Today, I feel kindness in the world like your mom says. Maybe she is the one the world has been kind to.” Allan commented.
Will lowered his head, explaining quietly his mother’s situation and his father’s just being out of work because of the bankrupt of the company. Will pointed at a house. “My dad says we’ll have to sell it to pay for mom’s treatment. Sometimes, I hope the world could be kind to our family soon.” Tears rolled down Will’s cheeks and Allan patted his back gently. But soon, Will wiped his face, shouldered his school bag, waved goodbye to Allan and rushed for school, never imagining he would see Allan ever again.
Allan stared at Will’s fading figure, lost in thought. 注意:
