My View on Educational Reform

People’s views on educational reform vary from person to person. Some people think the educational reform is very important and necessary. They hold this view because they think the traditional way of education is outmoded. We must change the test-oriented education into ability- oriented education. In this way, our country will develop faster and faster.

But others hold that the reform is unnecessary. In their opinion, the test-oriented education is very good. The test score is a ruler to measure the degree of students’ mastery of knowledge. With the traditional educational system, our country has developed fast and will do as ever.

1

As to me, I am in favor of the first view. The following are the reasons of my standpoint. First, the world keeps changing. If we know only book knowledge, it is not enough for us to keep pace of the rapid development of science and technology. Besides, high score doesn’t mean high intelligence. We must pay attention to the basic quality rather than the score. In many schools, teachers spend a lot of time developing their own abilities. It should be noted that our society needs people with different kinds of abilities not people with only high scores. In a word, schools should cultivate students’ different abilities according to their different interests.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Having a Part-time Job

At present, more and more university students are doing part-time jobs. They work as shop assistants, salespersons, waiters and so on. Like everything else, having a part-time job has both favorable and unfavorable aspects.

Generally, the advantages can be listed as follows. First, students can have the chance of earning pocket money and thus reduce their parents’ financial burden. In addition, they can give full play to their professional knowledge and skills. Above all, by watching and studying society, they can gain an insight into things that their textbooks can never teach them. Thus, they can form their own thoughts and become mature.

2

But every coin has two sides. The disadvantages of having a part-time job are also obvious. To begin with, students may have less time to relax or feed themselves mentally. They may feel university life is tiring and uninteresting. To make matters worse, some students have not enough time to review their lessons and they will fall behind others in study. Worst of all, some students regard earning money rather than acquiring knowledge as more important.

Through above analysis, I believe that the positive aspects outweigh the negative aspects. Therefore, to a certain degree, students will benefit a lot form their part-time jobs if they can keep a good balance between part-time jobs and studying.

How to Eliminate False Advertisements

Nowadays, some advertisers take advantage of newspapers, radio and television programs to do false advertisements which boast their products by over-praising their quality or exaggerating their function. These advertisements mislead consumers and damage the credit of business.

Many ways can contribute to solving this serious problem, but the following ones may be most effective. First of all, before they are published, all the advertisements must be censored(审查) by the authorities concerned to see whether they conform to their products. The advertisements must be objective

3

and scientific and irrelevant propaganda must be forbidden. Besides, the mass media should be advised not to accept any advertisements merely for the sake of money. They should be selective and discriminating in publishing advertisements. Finally, Laws should be passed to restrain false advertisements. Anyone who publishes false advertisements must bear the legal responsibility.

These are not the best and the only three measures we can take. But it should be noted that we should take strong actions to eliminate false advertisements and protect consumers’ interests.

Going on a Self-tour or a Package Tour

When we go traveling, we’ll be faced with the choice between a self-tour and a package tour. Before making the right choice, we had better make a close comparison(相同点) and contrast (不同点)of them.

First of all, if we go traveling ourselves, we can take any means of transport as we like. If we choose package tour, we can also choose between the plane and the train at different prices. Second, if we travel ourselves, we can go to any places at any time. Likewise, if we choose package tour, we can provide a great variety of journey to different places. Despite their similarities, self-tour and package tour are different in the following aspects.

4

First, it is cheaper to travel ourselves but it is inconvenient to buy the train or plane ticket and accommodate ourselves. However, though more expensive, package tour will arrange every thing for us and we need not bother about transportation and accommodation. Besides, traveling ourselves, we will feel quite free and can stay in any place as long as we like. On the contrary, by package tour we will be hurried along when time is up according to the schedule.

Therefore, it depends on which is better. If we want to be thrifty(节俭) and free, we should go traveling ourselves, but if we want to get relaxed, we should choose package tour.

• Should the University Campus Be Open to Tourists?

• (MyView on…)

University campuses, especially those of the renowned universities, have recently become the new tourist attractions. Pros优点 and cons缺点 have been put forward concerning this new phenomenon.

Some people are quite in favor of the campus’ opening to tourists while others are opposed to it. The opening of campus will stimulate the tourist industry,

5

but the easier access to campus will lead to some accidents or safety problems which will interfere in students’life.

In my opinion, campuses can be open to tourists once a week, say, on Saturday or Sunday. This suggestion, I believe, is quite feasible because it could kill two birds with one stone. For one thing, campuses could attract many tourists on weekends, thus boosting the tourism. For another, restricted opening of campus will beneficially narrow the gap between campuses and the outside world. Furthermore, this will also attract more public attention and build a great reputation for the university .

Housing Shortage in Large Cities

With the increase of population, housing shortage is becoming a more and more serious problem in large cities. Some people have no their own rooms to live in and have to spend a lot of money on renting a room; some families hav only a very small room to live in and what’s more, in some big families, three or four generations live in the same room. In some big cities, such as Shanghai, Beijing, some young people can't get married because they have no way to get a room.

There are many various reasons for the hosing shortage in large cities, but I think the main reasons for it are as follows: First, with the development of economy, the population increases so fast that the speed of housing building

6

can’t meed the need of city dwellers. Secondly, the government or large companies invest too much money to the commercial building and restaurants and some other recreational buildings, thus ignore the building of residence. Thirdly, with the development of industry, more and more factories take up so large area that there is no enough area to build residential houses.

Although housing shortage is a serious problem in large cities, yet there are many possible ways to solve it. For example, the govrnment should lay out some polices to prevent the population from increasing too fast. For another example, the government can guide to invest more money on residential houses. Besides, multi-storeyes residential building can be built to accommodate more people. However, as long as the society as a whole takes the housing shortage seriously, this problem will be solved sooner or later.

Lectures and Discussions

There is a heated debate over the role of lectures and discussions in the classroom. Some people believe that lectures can help students learn more quickly. In contrast, others hold that discussions can stimulate students to learn by themselves.

Those who hold the first opinion suggest that students attend more lectures. In their view, by giving lectures teachers help students master the knowledge they’ve accumulated over years of study and research. However, others think that in a discussion, the teacher usually guides the students instead of dominating

7

them. They argue that to get involved in a discussion, students have to develop their ability to analyze problems independently.

In my opinion, I stand on the side of neither idea First of all, either method has its disadvantages. Furthermore, each students has his or her preference. Thirdly, lectures are preferable to discussions in the teaching of science subjects, and on the contrary, discussions are preferable to lectures in studying the humanities. Therefore, we should adopt different teaching methods according to different subjects.

The Housing Problems in Big Cities

With increasingly rapid economic globalization and urbanization, the human race has entered a completely new stage in its history, which brought more problems to our attention. Absolutely, housing problems in big cities is one of them. And as a certain result of the housing problems, the housing price is too high and it is beyond most people’s financial ability.

As far as I am concerned, there are many factors contributing to the phenomenon. One very important argument for the housing problem is the incredible account of money were made to play in the market. As we all know, real estate is really a profitable industry a few years ago. As a result, it attracts more and more investments from banks, government agencies, non-government

8

agencies and even individual capital, which certainly lead to the price raising. Besides, I voice that government is also responsible for the housing problems. On behalf of economy growth and job opportunities, it takes loose supervision on land usage and real estate industry, which finally cause the rapid growing. The last but not the least, with lots of students graduating from universityes who largely prefer to stay at the big cities, the young people and new marriage couples also increase the burdens of housing problems.

Faced with this serious problem, we should take strict measures to solve it. First of all, the government should sapre no effort to limit the investments by levying heavy tax on consuming of super large or luxury houses or apartments, so that more treasure natural resources were limited. Frthermore, more allowance policies toward low-income families should be put to benefit more family. Meanwhile, people should also challenge the traditional idea of owning a house, instead they can rent a house. Only by this way, the housing problem in big cities can be solved.
