The Wisdom of One Word

Upon reaching downtown El Paso,I met an old man,a bum,on the street corner. He stopped me and questioned me as I passed by.He asked me if I was running away from home,I suppose because I looked so young.I told him,“Not exactly, sir,”since my father had given me a ride to the freeway in Houston and given me his blessings while saying, “It is important to follow your dream and what is in your heart.Son.”

After conversing for a few minutes, the friendly bum told me to follow him.He told me that he had something grand to show me and share with me.We walked a couple of blocks until we came upon the downtown Public Library.

The bum first led me to a table and asked me to sit down and wait for a moment while he looked for something special amongst the shelves. A few moments later,he returned with a couple of old books under his arms and set them on the table. He then sat down beside me and spoke. He started with a few statements that were very special and that changed my life.He said,“There are two things that l want to teach you,and they are these:Number one is to never judge a book by its cover, for a cover can fool you.”He followed with.“I’ll bet you think I’m a bum, don’t you, young man?”

I said,“Well,uh,yes,l guess so,sir.”

“Well,I’ve got a little surprise for you.I am one of the wealthiest men in the world. I have probably everything any man could ever want. But a year ago,my wife passed away, and since then I have been deeply reflecting upon life.I realized there were certain things I had not yet experienced in life.one of which was what it would be like to live like a bum on the streets. So,you see, don’t ever judge a book by its cover, for a cover can fool you.”

“Number two is to learn how to read,my boy.For there is only one thing that people can't take away from you,and that is your wisdom.”At that moment,he reached forward, grabbed my right hand in his and put them upon the books he’d pulled from the shelves. They were the writings of Plato and Aristotle immortal classics from ancient times.

His parting request was for me to never forget what he taught me. I haven’t. 16.The writer was riding his car with his father when he saw the old man

Angelina Jolie: A Beauty with a Soul

1 Angelina Jolie:humanitarian, mother, movie star and object of desire for men everywhere. 2 Angelina Jolie was born in LA as Angelina Jolie Voight on June 4,1975.Being the daughter of Academy Award-winning actor Jon Voight, she was no stranger to the Hollywood scene in her childhood and teenage days. That, and having the face of an angel of course, gave Angelina Jolie the opportunity to become a superstar in the American movie industry!

3 Because of her relationships with famous Hollywood stars like Brad Pitt,Angelina Jolie provides a constant source of gossip for the press. But let’s not forget that Angelina Jolie has a talent for portraying strong and unusual women that has helped her to propel her to the Hollywood A—list.Today, Jolie is one of the richest female leads in the movie business.

4 Jolie’s beauty is almost legendary. For the past decade she has been voted the most beautiful woman in the world numerous times;she is,however, rather modest about her own looks.Inside sources say she is unhappy about her nose and hips and that she doesn’t consider herself to be the beauty that the rest of the world perceives her to be.

5 Angelina considers motherhood to be her most important and rewarding role to date. The 31-year-old star, along with ex-husband Billy Bob Thornton, adopted Cambodia-born Maddox in 2002 after seeing and falling in love with him at one of the country’s orphanages.Jolie says that adopting Maddox was the best decision she had ever made.In July of 2005,Jolie adopted a six-month-old girl from Ethiopia,Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt,who was orphaned by AIDS.On May 27,2006,Jolie gave birth to a daughter named Shiloh,in Namibia.Becoming a mother certainly seems to have had a calming influence on Angelina.

6 For the past few years, the gossip and innuendo that usually surrounds Jolie has made way for coverage of the work she does as Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations.Few actors

www.123zcyy.com

and actresses of her generation spend so much time working for the poor and needy. She has personally donated $4 million since 200 1 to Pakistani earthquake victims and other causes--most recently to the maternity wards of state hospitals in Namibia, the impoverished African nation where she gave birth to her daughter Shiloh. The first photos of her new baby, which Jolie released to Getty Images, brought a reported $4.1 million payment from People magazine--Jolie elected to donate the proceeds to charity.

7 We can clearly see that Angelina Jolie is a personality with many faces. Therefore,it is rather difficult to predict what kind of career and life she will choose next.In 2004,she vowed to quit the movie business and lead a quite life with her son Maddox.Since the life of Angelina Jolie never was particularly quiet,we can surely count on more spectacular, interesting and perhaps curious career moves from her in near future! 23Paragraph 2 24Paragraph 4 25Paragraph 5 26Paragraph 6 A.Background of Jolie B. To Live in Harmony

So many of us hold on to little resentments that may have stemmed from an argument, a misunderstanding, or some other painful events. Stubbornly, we wait for someone else to reach out to us -- believing this is the only way we can forgive or rekindle a friendship or family relationship.

An acquaintance of mine, whose health isn't very good, recently told me that she hasn't spoken to her son in almost three years. “Why not?” I asked. She said that she and her son had had a disagreement about his wife and that she wouldn't speak to him again unless he called first. When I suggested that she be the one to reach out, she resisted initially and said, “I can't do that. He's the one who should apologize.” She was literally willing to die before reaching out to her only son. After a little gentle encouragement, she did decide to be the first one to reach out. To her amazement, her son was grateful for her willingness to call and offered an apology of his own. As is usually the case when someone takes the chance and reaches out, everyone wins.

Whenever we hold on to our anger, we turn “small stuff” into really “big stuff” in our minds. We start to believe that our positions are more important than our happiness. They are not. If you want to be a more peaceful person you must understand that being right is almost never more important than allowing yourself to be happy. The way to be happy is to let go, and reach out. Let other people be right. This doesn't mean that you're wrong. Everything will be fine. You'll experience the peace of letting go, as well as the joy of letting others be fight. You'll also notice that, as you reach out and let others be \"rightoward you. They might even reach back. But, if for some reason they don't, that's okay too. You will have the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your part to create a more loving world, and certainly you will be more peaceful yourself. 31.The writer’s intention in writing this article is to tell us that

The Important Things to Success

A person may have an idea about himself that will prevent him from doing good work. He may have the idea that he is not capable of it. A child may think he is stupid because he does not understand how to make the most of his mental faculties, or he may accept another person's mistaken estimate of his ability, older people may be handicapped by the mistaken belief that they are incapable of learning anything new because of their age.

A person who believes that he is incapable will not make a real effort, because he feels that it would be useless. He won't go at a job with the confidence necessary for success. He is therefore likely to fail, and the failure will strengthen his belief in his incompetence. Alfred Adler, a famous doctor, had an experience which illustrates this. When he was a small boy he got off to a poor start in arithmetic. His teacher got the idea that he had no ability in arithmetic, and told his parents what she thought in order that they would not expect too much of him. In this way, they too developed the idea, “Isn't it too bad that Alfred can't do arithmetic?” He accepted their mistaken estimate of his ability, felt that it was useless to try, and was very poor at arithmetic, just as they expected.

One day Adler succeeded in solving a problem which none of the other students had been able to solve. This gave him confidence. He rejected the idea that he couldn't do arithmetic and was determined to show them that he could. His newfound confidence stimulated him to go at arithmetic problems with a new spirit. He now worked with interest, determination and purpose, and he soon became extraordinary good at arithmetic.

This experience made him realize that many people have more ability than they think they have, and that lack of success is as often the result of lack of knowledge of how to apply one's ability, lack of confidence, and lack of determination as it is the result of lack of ability. 36.A person might be kept from doing good work because

Death Penalties

You brush up against a lot of weird stuff in the course of child rearing, but one phenomenon that always had me scratching my head was the parents who hit their kids to teach them that hitting was a bad thing. In their defense, they had a civic model for that kind of bizarre circular reasoning. Americans still live in one of the few countries that kill people to make clear what a terrible thing killing people is.Hardly any other civilized place does this anymore.

Last week the Supreme Court agreed to reconsider capital punishment, a boomerang the justices find coming back at them time and time again. Much of the debate about the death penalty since it reared its ugly head again in the l970s has been about whether it is disproportionately meted out to poor minorities, whether it should be permitted for juvenile offenders, whether various methods constitute cruel and unusual punishment. Most of these discussions are designed not to examine underlying deep moral issues but to allow Americans to continue to put people to death and still feel good about themselves.

Since l976,more than a thousand men and women have been executed in the United States. But during that same period more than l23 death-row inmates have been proved innocent. That’s a terrible statistical average. Put another way, more than l23 individuals truly guilty of savage crimes were walking free while someone else sat waiting on death row.And most,if not all,of those death-row inmates would have been wrongly executed if not for the lengthy appeal process death-penalty advocates like to decry.

Some years ago the execution of a woman named Karla Faye Tucker in Texas got a lot of attention. When Tucker was put to death, there was a mob scene outside the prison. Some of those who gathered there were opponents of the death penalty. Some wanted the execution to proceed. And some of the latter group danced and laughed and cheered and acted as though they were at the Super Bowl and their team had just scored a touchdown. If they had lived 300 years earlier, they would have happily paraded through streets with Karla Faye’s head on a pike.

Most people who support capital punishment can’t be counted as members of that crazy mob.But this is one of those issues where there isn’t really a middle ground.Just because the electric chair has been phased out doesn’t mean civilization has prevailed. The question isn’t whether executions can be made painless:it’s whether they’re wrong. 41.In the first paragraph, the author introduces his topic by

A.posing a contrast B.making a comparison C.presenting a lawsuit

D.exploring the root cause of murder 正确答案:B

42.Most of the debates about capital punishment surround all of following EXCEPT

A.its applicability to minor criminals B.possible unfairness in the executions C.permanent cancellation of death penalty D.means of ending the criminals’ lives 正确答案:C

Big Rocks

One day, an expert in time management was speaking to a group of students and, to drive home a point, used an illustration those students will never forget.

As he stood in front of the group of overachievers he said, \"OK, time for a quiz.\" He pulled out a one-gallon, wide-mouth jar and set it on the table in front of him. (46) Then he carefully placed them, one at a time, into the jar. When the jar was filled to the top and no more rocks would fit inside, he asked, \"Is this jar full?\"

(47) The time management expert replied, \"Really?\" He reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of gravel. He dumped some gravel in and shook the jar, causing pieces of gravel to work themselves down into the spaces between the big rocks. He then asked the group once more, \"Is this jar full?\"

By this time the class was on to him. \"Probably not,\" one of them answered. \"Good!\" he replied. (48) He started dumping the sand in the jar and it went into all of the spaces left between the rocks and the gravel. Once more he asked the question, \"Is this jar full?\"

\"No!\" the class shouted. (49)Then he grabbed a pitcher of water and began to pour it in until the jar was filled to the brim. Then he looked at the class and asked, \"What is the point of this illustration?\" One eager student raised his hand and said, \"The point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard you can always fit some more things in it!\"

(50)The truth this illustration teaches us is if you don't put the big rocks in first, you'll never get them in at all. What are the 'big rocks' in your life? Time with your loved ones, your education, your dreams, a worthy cause, or teaching others? Remember to put these big rocks in first or you'll never get them in at all.\"

A.He reached under the table and brought out a bucket of sand B. \"No,\" the speaker replied, \"that's not the point C. Everyone in the class yelled, \"Yes.\" D. Once again he said, \"Good.\"

E. He figured out that where the priorities lie F. He also produced about a dozen fist-sized rocks

www.123zcyy.com

语he指代的是教师。

50.由于下文老师给出的答案和上文学生的答案不一致,而且后一句提到“The truth this illustration teaches us is if you don't put the big rocks in first, you'll never get them in at all.”“这个例子真正要反映的是如果你没有先投入大块的石头,那么以后你就没法再填进去了。”所以说老师先否定了学生的答案,继而说出了正确的答案。 六.完形填空

Advertisements

A great deal of the knowledge we have about household goods derives largely from the advertisements we read. Advertisements introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence of (51) we already know about. (52) you want to buy a washing machine, it is more than likely you would obtain details regarding performance, price, etc. from an advertisement. Lots of people (53) that they never read advertisements, but this claim may be seriously doubted. It is (54) possible not to read advertisements these days. And what (55) they often are, too! Just think what a railway station or a newspaper would be like (56) advertisements. Would you enjoy (57) at a blank wall or reading railway bylaws while waiting for a train? Would you like to read only closely printed columns of news in your daily paper? A cheerful, witty advertisement makes such a (58) to a drab wall or a newspaper full of the daily ration of calamities.

We must not forget, (59), that advertising makes a positive contribution to our (60).Newspapers, commercial radio and television companies could not survive without this (61) of revenue. The fact that we pay so (62) for our daily paper, or can enjoy so many broadcast programs is due entirely to the money spent by advertisers.
