In a device capable of beingdisposed within or propelled along the interior of a pipe, a solenoid energized by atransistor pulse generator is provided for creating a modulated or varying magnetic fieldcapable of being detected outside the pipe or enclosure. The device may be used inconjunction with several detector coils along the route to determine the velocity of theapparatus to which it is attached. The transmitter assembly may be mounted on skids toreduce friction. The magnetic field may be detected by a Hall plate or a magnetometer.The arrangement may be attached or built in to a squeegee go-devil for purposes oflocation, or may be used in combination with a pair of bellows 25, 26 Fig. 2 subjected tothe pressures existing in a pipe through apertures 20a, 21a in rubber discs 17. Thepressure differences are measured at different points along a pipe, to locate a leak, andoperate micro-switches 29, 30 to change the capacity in a transistor pulse circuitenergizing the solenoid.
