45.The factors that add up to a happy life for most people are not what we typically hear about. (71) Things like earning a master’s degree don’t make people happy over an extended period of time. Rather, the key to happiness, and the difference between happy and unhappy Americans, is a life that reflects values and practices like: hard work, marriage, charity, and freedom. Work

When more than 1000 people across the country were asked in 2002. If you were to get enough money to live comfortably for the rest of your life, would you stop working? fewer than a third of the Americans answered yes.

Contrary to widely held opinion, most Americans like or even love their work. In 2002 an amazing percent of workers said they were very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with their jobs. This isn’t true just for those with high-paying, highly skilled jobs but for all workers across the country. And the percentage is almost exactly the same among those with and without college degrees and among those working for private companies, nonprofit organizations and the government.

For most Americans, job satisfaction is nearly equivalent to life satisfaction. Among those people who say they are very happy in their lives, 95 percent are also satisfied with their jobs. Furthermore, job satisfaction would seem to be causing overall happiness, not the other way around.

In 2004, 42 percent of married Americans said they were very happy. Just 23 percent of never-married people said this. Overall, married people were six times more likely to say that they were very happy than to report that they were not too happy. And generally speaking, married women say they’re happy more often than married men. Marriage & Family

Marriage isn’t just associated with happiness it brings happiness, at least for a lot of us. One 2003 study that followed 24,000 people for more than a decade

documented a significant increase in happiness after people married. For some, the happiness increase wore off in a few years, and they ended up back at their premarriage happiness levels. But for others, it lasted as long as a lifetime. What about having kids? While children, on their own, don’t appear to raise the happiness level (they actually tend to slightly lower the happiness of a marriage). Studies suggest that children are almost always part of an overall lifestyle of happiness, which is likely to include such things as marriage and religion. Charity

We’ve all heard that money doesn’t buy happiness, and that’s certainly true. But there is one way to get it: Give money away.

The evidence is clear that gifts to charitable organizations and other worthy causes bring substantial life satisfaction to the givers. If you want $50 in authentic happiness today just donate it to a favorite charity.

People who give money to charity are 43 percent more likely than non-givers to say they’re very happy. Volunteers are 42 percent more likely to be very happy than non-volunteers. It doesn’t matter whether the gifts of money go to churches or concerts; religious giving and unreligious giving leave people equally happy, and far happier than people who don’t give. Even donating blood, an especially personal kind of giving, improves our attitude. Fundamentally, the more people give, the happier they get. Freedom

In fact, freedom and happiness are intimately related: People who consider themselves free are a lot happier than those who don’t. In 2000 the General Social Survey revealed that people who personally feel completely free or very free were twice as likely as those who don’t say they’re very happy about their lives.

Not all types of freedom are the same in terms of happiness, however. Researchers have shown that economic freedom brings happiness, as does political and religious freedom. On the other hand, moral freedom—a lack of constraints on behavior does not. People who feel they have unlimited moral choices in their lives when it comes to matters of sex or drugs, for example, tend to be unhappier than those who do not feel they have so many choices in life.

Lessons for America

(72) The data tell us that what matters most for happiness is not having a lot of things but having healthy values. Without these values, our jobs and our economy will bring us joyless riches. The facts can help remind us of what we should be paying attention to as individuals and as families, if we want to be happy. Our happiness is simply too important to us—and to America—to

do anything less

What will probably bring about overall happiness() A.To be satisfied with one’s job B.To earn a lot of money C.To work for big companies D.To gain a college degree

48.Passage Three

Crime is a serious problem in Britain. One sort of crime which particularly worries people is juvenile crime—that is, crimes committed by young people. For some years, juvenile crime has been increasing. There are two main sorts of juvenile crime: stealing and violence. Most people do not understand why young people commit these crimes. There are, I think, a large number of different reasons.

These crimes are not usually committed by people who are poor or in need. Young people often dislike and hate the adult world. They will do things to show that they are rebels. Also in Britain today it is easier for young people to commit crimes because they have more freedom to go where they like and more money to do what they like.

There are two other possible causes which are worth mentioning. More and more people in Britain live in large towns. In a large town no one knows who anyone else is or where they live. But in the village I come from crimes are rare because everyone knows everybody else.

Although it is difficult to explain, I think the last cause is very important. Perhaps there is something wrong with our society which encourages violence

and crime. It is a fact that all the crime children are exposed to films and reports about crime and violence. Many people do not agree that this influences the young people, but I think that young people are very much influenced by the society they grow in. I feel that the fault may be as much with our whole society as with these young people

From the passage we know that many British people are confused about() A.the causes of juvenile crimes B.the rise of the crime rate

C.the problem of crimes in their country D.the various kinds of juvenile delinquency

49.Which of the following is not mentioned as good sources of vitamins A and C in the last paragraph() A.Citrus fruits and vegetables B.Deep yellow vegetables C.Meat of various kinds D.Dark green, leafy vegetables

50.Passage Two

A blizzard(暴风雪) is a severe weather condition characterized by low temperatures and strong winds, greater than 35 miles per hour, bearing a great amount of snow.

Because the factors for classifying winter storms are complex, there are many definitions of what a blizzard truly is. But it is generally agreed that in order to be classified as a blizzard, as opposed to merely a winter storm, the weather must meet several conditions. The storm must decrease visibility to a quarter of a mile for three hours running, include snow or ice as precipitation, and have wind speeds of at least 32 miles per hour, which means Force seven or more on the wind scale.

Another standard, according to Environment Canada, is that the winter storm must have winds of 40 kilometers per hour or more, plenty of snow, visibility less than one kilometer, a temperature of less than minus 25 degrees Celsius, and all of these conditions must last for four hours or more, before the storm can properly be called a blizzard.

When all of these conditions continue after snow has stopped falling, the storm is referred to as a ground blizzard. An extreme form of a blizzard is a whiteout, when the downdrafts, together with snowfall, become so severe that it is impossible to distinguish the ground from the air. People caught in a

whiteout can quickly become disoriented, losing their sense of up and down as well as their sense of direction. Severe blizzards can also occur along with arctic cyclones(气旋)

What’s the passage mainly about()

A.The definitions of blizzards

B.The disasters caused by blizzards

C.The amount of snow brought by blizzards D.The strong winds caused by blizzards

51.Our child’s behavior is greatly influenced by the way we react to what he has done. Our reactions help to determine whether our child will repeat his behavior or whether he will do something different. This statement is a very important part of a principle of behavioral psychology.

The principle states that a behavior is influenced or affected by how the environment immediately responds to the behavior. Perhaps without realizing it, you have used this principle many times.

On the occasion when you told your child what a good boy he was after he cleaned up his room, you used the principle. When you sent your child to his room for fighting with his brother, you used the principle. When I gave Kim a cookie after she started to cry, I used the principle. In each of these examples, a particular behavior occurred first—cleaning up a room, fighting, and crying. In addition, there was a reaction to each behavior—the child was praised, sent to his room, or given a cookie. By these actions, we have influenced the previous behaviors and have helped to determine whether those behaviors will occur again in the future

What is the lecture mainly about()

A.Children’s and environmental protection B.Children’s behavior and fighting C.Children’s behavior and our response D.Children and principles

52.Passage One

When I was studying English at a training center in Washington D.C. in 1998, I shared a house with two young Americans, Jim and Steve. Jim was studying French and Steve Chinese, both at the Foreign Service Institute. We shared many things in common, but we also thought and acted quite differently. Steve was interested in speaking Chinese. He always tried every opportunity to talk with me with his very English-like pronunciation. I was often touched by his diligence. However, I wanted to practice English with him, too. So we often

spoke at the same time in the other's mother tongue. Jim was fresh from college and the youngest of the three. He was going out all the time. The only time we met was at breakfast. There was a small round table in our kitchen, where we sat around to enjoy our food. Steve had Chinese fast food such as dumplings or noodles, and I ate bread and boiled eggs. But Jim often just drank a cup of tea because he had nothing in his fridge. He was too busy dating pretty French girls to do any shopping. I often offered him some of my food. But Steve told me in his poor Chinese that I didn't need to do that. He said that it was Jim's own fault and that it served him right. Although he was learning Chinese, he still held his American sense of values.

Two years later, I returned to China. The three of us still keep in touch. Jim now works in a travel agency in Paris. He got married to one of the pretty girls. He wrote to tell us that he can now enjoy a delicious breakfast with his beautiful wife every morning in their comfortable living room. Steve wants to work in China. And I'm helping him with this. I have introduced him to the dean of the Oversea Section of our university. He is very interested in Steve. He wants to know if Steve can work here teaching the oversea students Chinese. I have sent the message to Steve. I'm sure he'd be very happy to accept the job. However, I hope he could try harder to improve himself. Otherwise, all the overseas students would speak with his terrible pronunciation!

Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage() A.The three of them were all language majors B.Steve and Jim were more alike in character C.The author didn't enjoy talking with Steve D.Their living condition was rather poor

53.Like most people, I’ve long understood that I will be judged by my occupation, that my profession is a gauge(标准) people use to see how smart or talented I am. Recently, however, I was disappointed to see that it also decides how I’m treated as a person.

Last year I left a professional position as a small-town reporter and took a job waiting tables. As someone paid to serve food to people, I had customers say and do things to me I suspect they’d never say or do to their most casual acquaintances. One night a man talking on his cell phone waved me away, then beckoned(示意) me back with his finger minutes later, complaining he was ready to order and asking where I’d been.

I had waited tables during summers in college and was treated like a peon(勤杂工) by plenty of people. But at 19 years old, I believed I deserved inferior

treatment from professional adults. Besides, people responded to me differently after I told them I was in college. Customers would joke that one day I’d be sitting at their table, waiting to be served.

Once I graduated I took a job at a community newspaper. From my first day, I heard a respectful tone from everyone who called me. I assumed this was the way the professional world worked—cordially(友善地).

I soon found out differently, I sat several feet away from an advertising sales representative with a similar name. Our calls would often get mixed up and someone asking for Kristen would be transferred to Christie. The mistake was immediately evident. Perhaps it was because money was involved, but people used a tone with Kristen that they never used with me.

My job title made people treat me with courtesy. So it was a shock to return to the restaurant industry.

It’s no secret that there’s a lot to put up with when waiting tables, and fortunately, much of it can be easily forgotten when you pocket the tips. The service industry, by definition, exists to cater to others’ needs. Still, it seemed that many of my customers didn’t get the difference between server and servant.

I’m now applying to graduate school, which means someday I’ll return to a profession where people need to be nice to me in order to get what they want. I think I’ll take them to dinner first, and see how they treat someone whose only job is to serve them

The purpose of taking her clients to dinner is to() A.arouse their sympathy for people living a humble life B.see what kind of person they are

C.show her generosity towards people inferior to her D.experience the feeling of being served

1.DDas for:至于……,就……而言;as long as:只要;besides:除……

[考点]状语从句 B一般没有in the first time这种搭配;the first time:

本句强调的是地点状语on a lonely island,所以应用that引导。

have sth. done:某事被做,让人做……,have it checked是让人检查的意思

【精析】Ashare sth. with sb.

根据句意并结合选项可知,results和关系词(指代先行词survey)为所属关系,所以应用the results of which或whose results引导从句,相当于the results of that survey。

working hard at his or her lessons是一个插入成分。

It is/was requested/required/demanded…+主语从句句型中,从句要用虚拟语气,即谓语动词应用should+动词原形的形式,should可以省略。

【精析】Chold up:举起,阻拦;hold out:伸出,提供;hold back:控制,抑制;hold onto:紧握,保持。

23.JA.studied(v.学习,研究)B.continuing(v.继续,持续) C.by(prep.通过)D.who(pron. 引导定语从句)F.improve(v.改进,改善) G.truth(n.事实,)H.ignored(v.忽视,不予理睬) I.recently(adv. 那些) K.for(prep. J。 24.A 25.E 26.C 27.A 28.C 29.E 30.E

.Electronic Communications Cannot Replace Face-to-Face ContactThe picture above is a vivid description of the phenomenon that teenagers and their parents usually communicate through the Internet. Although the Internet has changed the way of communication, I do not think that electronic communications can replace face-to-face contact.Firstly, face-to-face contact is much better than electronic communications in terms of enhancing parent-child relationship, for the former can better guarantee sincerity of the communication. Secondly, face-to-face contact can make people concentrate on what they are talking about. So people can think about the problems seriously. Last but not least, face-to-face contact can eliminate distrust between parents and children because both sides will not be suspicious about the other’s intentions if they can talk with each other in such a direct way.To sum up, the Internet has greatly influenced the ways of communication, but it can never replace face-to-face contact
