第一节: 阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

(A)

Harvard University named historian Drew Gilpin Faust as its first female president on Sunday, ending a lengthy and secretive search to find a successor(接任者)to Lawrence Summers .

The seven-member Harvard Corporation elected Faust, a noted scholar on History of the American South and dean of Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, as the university’s 28th president.

“This is a great day, and a historic day for Harvard,” James R. Houghton, chairman of the presidential search committee, said in a statement. “Drew Faust is an inspiring and accomplished leader, a superb scholar, a dedicated(献身的) teacher, and a wonderful human being.”

Her selection is noteworthy given the heated debates over Summers’ comments that genetic differences between the sexes might help explain the lack of women in top science jobs.

Faust has been dean of Radcliffe since 2001, two years after the former women’s college was combined into the university as a research center with a mission to study gender issues.

Some professors have quietly groused that the 371-year-old university is appointing a fifth president who is not a scientist. No scientist has had the top job since James Bryant Conant retired in 1953; its last four have come from the fields of classics, law literature and economics.

Faust is the first Harvard president who did not receive a degree from the university since Charles Chauncy, a graduate of Cambridge University, who died in office in 1762. She attended the University of Pennsylvania.

“Teaching staff turned to her constantly,” said Sheldon Hackney, a former president of the University of Pennsylvania and historian who worked closely with Faust. “She’s very clear. She has a sense of humor, but she’s very strong-minded. You come to trust in her because she’s so solid.”

41. Which might be the best title for the passage? A. Harvard named its 1st female president. B. History of Harvard University changed. C. Debates on female equality ended. D. Drew Gilpin Faust, a famous woman historian. 42. Which is NOT true about Drew Gilpin Faust? A. She is the 28th president of Harvard University. B. She is a famous scholar from the American South. C. A. women cannot achieve as much as men in management B. women cannot hold important positions in society C. women can match men in science jobs D. few women make top scientists owing to genes

44. The underlined word “groused” in the 6th paragraph means _________. A. approved B. commented C. complained D. indicated 45. This passage probably appears in a _________. A. biography B. personal letter C. research paper D. newspaper report

(B)

Scholars and researchers have tried to discover what personality characteristics go along with success in intercultural experiences. Their findings have often been unclear or incomplete. But three characteristics stand out in their reports: patience, a sense of humor, and the awareness of being unclear.

Patience, of course, is the ability to keep calm even when things do not go as one wants them to, or hopes they will, or has even

been sure they will. Impatience sometimes brings improvements in relations with other people, but usually it does not.

A person with a sense of humor is less likely to take things too seriously and more ready to see the humor in her own reactions than is a humorless person. The value of a sense of humor really needs to be paid more attention to.

“The awareness of being unclear” is a more difficult concept than patience or a sense of humor. Foreigners often find themselves in situations that are unclear to the newcomers. That is, they do not know what is happening in the situation. Perhaps they do not understand the local language well enough, or they do not know how some system or organization works, or they can’t be sure of different people’s roles in what is going on. “It’s like I just got here from the moon,” a Chinese graduate student who newly arrived in the United States said, “things are just so different here.” 46.The passage mainly tells us _____________. A.that it’s not easy to travel abroad B.that humor is very important in communication C.of some characteristics in dealing with foreigners D.of three main ways useful for communicating with foreigners

47.According to the passage, what characteristic should be most focused on? A.Patience B.The awareness of being unclear C.The sense of humor D.Understanding each other. 48.“The awareness of being unclear” refers to_____________. A.knowing the meaning of an exact situation B.not stating clearly what happens C.realizing the possible misunderstanding in a situation D.being aware of the unclear situation

49.According to the writer, the Chinese students is___________. A.a hard-working student B.recently back from the moon C.interested in the study of moon D.not used to the culture in America 50.Which of the following can best sum up the passage? A.It is necessary to learn the language before you go to the country. B.Americans are used to the culture of other countries. C.One needs many characteristics to live in another country. D.To live in a foreign land one should get fully prepared.

(C)

With fifteen years Britain and other nations should be well on with the building of huge industrial complexes for the recycling of waste . The word rubbish could lose its meaning because everything which goes into the dumps would be made into something useful . Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else .

The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly what raw materials go into it and what go out . The aim is to find out how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant for recycling waste were built just outside the city . This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel , lead and copper , but also paper and rubber as well .

Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish . When this project is

complete , the rubbish will be processed like this : First , it will pass through sharp metal bars which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed ; then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids ; after that founders and rollers will break up everything that can be broken . Finally , the rubbish will pass under magnets (磁铁), which will remove the bits of iron and steel ; the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage .

The first full-scale giant recycling plants are perhaps fifteen years away . Indeed , with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps , some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long . 51.The phrase “be well on with ……” (Para .1) most probably means . A.have completed what was started B.get ready to start C.have achieved a great deal in D.put an end to

52.What is NOT mentioned as a part of the recycling process described in paragraph 3? A.Breaking up whatever is breakable . B.Sharpening metal bars . C.Separating light elements from the heavy ones . D.Sorting out small pieces of metal .

53.What’s the main reason for big cities to build their own recycling plants ? A.To deal with wastes in a better way . B.To protect the environment from pollution . C.To get raw materials locally .

D.To get big profits from those plants .

54.The first full-scale huge recycling plants . A.began to operate fifteen years ago B.will probably take less than fifteen years to build C.will be built fifteen years later D.will probably be in operation in fifteen years 55.The passage is mainly about . A.a cheap way to get energy B.the location of recycling plants C.new ways of recycling wastes D.the probability of city environment

According to Shenzhen Daily, the city’s vehicle population has reached over 1 million and 80 percent of the vehicles are private cars.

Nowadays more and more families own private cars. Private cars, as the product of modern civilization, have been playing a vital role in people's daily activities. Firstly, private cars are a convenient means of transportation. You can go wherever you like. Secondly, there is no doubt that private cars will have a great impact on the economic growth. The rapid car industry growth will contribute much to keeping the country's economy growing at a higher rate in the near future.

But every coin has two sides. The development of the private cars will bring about a series of problems. For example, the polluted air given off by cars will do great harm to our health, too many private cars will lead to traffic jams and a great deal of energy will be wasted and so on. That is why many people suggest we should go cycling in the city instead.

However, I think that the advantages of owning a car outweigh the disadvantages. Therefore, it seems to me that China should increase its output of automobiles and enlarge the private car market. We should take advantages of private cars and make them serve us better. Meantime ,we hope that satisfactory solutions to these negative problems will be found soon.

All are welcome! 第二节:读写任务(共1小题,满分25分)

Travel by Bike in the City

In this passage, the writer explains the advantages and disadvantages of owning private cars in the city. And he agrees to enlarge the private car market and make better use of them.

But I think bikes should be the most popular form of transportation in our city.

First, a bike is much cheaper than a car, most consumers can afford it, and if there is something wrong

with a bike, people can have it fixed easily. Second, bikes need much less parking space than cars. The third reason is that it can save energy for our country. Moreover, it brings no pollution to the air, so it helps to clean the atmosphere.

Therefore, the best form of transportation is travelling by bike ,which is a healthy,“green” and economical way. But with the development of our economy, the day when we use cars as the most popular form of transportation is sure to come.
