Meles Wudima was five years old and both his parents were dead. He headed to his aunt's, but she had seven children and couldn't take him in permanently. Soon Wudima participated in the street economy, along with roughly 10,000 other orphan(孤儿)kids in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. To survive, he shined shoes, sold peanuts and begged.

Then, when he was about nine, Wudima met Meheret Worku.

In 1996, Worku flew from Edmonton, Canada to her hometown of Addis Ababa to visit her mother, accompanied by her husband, Scott Smillie, and their two children, Rebecca and Rachael. The family came with the intention of helping street-involved children, but without a set plan. It was one of Rebecca's questions that finally pushed Worku and Smillie to act. \"Why aren't they wearing any shoes?” she asked about kids in the street.

Worku left Ethiopia in 1981 on a scholarship to Germany. From Germany she moved to Edmonton, finished her studies at the University of Alberta, began teaching, met Smillie and started a family. She got these opportunities thanks to her education --- a gift from her father, an Ethiopian general. The father used his relative (相对的) wealth to pay for his eight daughters and one son to attend private school, wanting to offer them what his own sisters never got. Back then, Ethiopia's school enrollment(登 记)was just 25 per cent. When Worku's father died, his final wish, she says, was for his children to someday return to help their country.

All Ethiopian children can attend government schools, but many don't. Uniforms, books and other expenses, poor health and being forced into work are all barriers. Smillie and Worku decided to focus on getting street-involved orphan children to class. As the years passed, Worku continued to travel between Canada and Ethiopia to support Wudima and dozens of other Ethiopian students.

Now 29, Wudima has a job as a tour guide. Some young people are addicted to drugs or they become pickpockets, he says. \"If you have school, that's a good advantage to keep yourself from everything. \" Of Worku, he says, \"She's like my mother.”

24. Why did young Wudima get involved in the street economy?

A. He had to make his own living. B. He saw huge profits in the economy. C. He wanted to help the orphan kids. D. He liked to help with his aunt's business. 25.

What can be learnt about education in Ethiopia? A. Many children have no money, time or energy for it. B. Government schools provide free books and uniforms. C. The government attaches great importance to education. D. There aren't enough schools for all the school-aged children.

B. a retail associate D. a web developer

26. What conclusion can we draw about Worku?

A. She has achieved success all by herself. B. She is the most gifted child of her father's. C. She has lived up to her father's expectations. D. She overcame many barriers to get an education. 27. What can be inferred about Wudima?

A. He feels dependent on Worku. B. He must be grateful to Worku. C. He will follow in Worku's footsteps. D. He has done something really bad before.

One supermarket chain in Finland has come up with a way to reduce food waste. All 900 S-Market stores throughout the country knock 60 percent off already-reduced meat and fish at 9 o'clock each evening in an effort to move it off shelves before expiring(过期)at midnight.

It's part of a two-year campaign to reduce food waste that company managers decide to call “happy hour” in the hope of drawing in regulars.

It makes customers get super-cheap food, retailers(零售商)don't have to pay for disposal (and earn more than if they donated the food), and it eases the burden on the planet.

Reducing food waste is not often enough seen as an effective solution to the climate crisis. Energy, for example, receives more focus than food, and yet food is something that individuals can and should solve on a personal level. A recent UN report stated that a shocking one-third of food produced for human consumption never gets eaten. This equals 1.3 billion tons of food worth $ 680 billion. From the report:

“Causes of food loss and waste differ greatly between developed and developing countries, as well as between regions. Reducing this loss and waste would reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve food security.”

Supermarkets are well positioned to make a difference when it comes to food waste, but they have to be willing to accept some financial losses. Reducing prices on nearly-expired food is an excellent place to start, as is doing away with bulk discounts, e. g. two for the price of one, which encourages over-buying.

Individuals have a responsibility, too, to eat more of what they buy. Take a moment to look at the contents of your refrigerator and pantry(食品储藏室)before shopping and work with what you have, in order of how soon items will expire. Don't be influenced by in-the-moment desires that are unlikely to get used in their entirety. Consider mentioning the S-Market initiative(新方案)to your local grocery store, in hopes that it, too, will consider carrying a happy hour of sorts out. 28. What does S-Market's act result in?

A. Greater recognition. C. More financial profit.

29. What can we know about food waste?

A. People are fully aware of the problem.

B. Solving it is an effective way to fight climate crisis. C. People need to quickly find out the reason for food waste.

B. A win-win-win situation. D. More new customers.

D. There's more food waste in developed countries than in developing countries. 30. In the last paragraph, the author advises readers to.

A. buy with care

B. join their local grocery stores' campaign C. come up with new ways to solve food waste

D. make sure there's enough space for food in the fridge 31. What is the best title for the text? A. It Is Everyone's Responsibility to Solve Food Waste B. Food Waste Hasn't Been Taken Seriously Enough

C. Finnish Supermarkets Use “Happy Hour\" to Fight Food Waste D. Finnish Supermarkets Sell Nearly-expired Food Uniquely

A study, led by researchers from the University of California, San Diego, tracked the same 875 mother-child pairs in Chile for 16 years, conducting assessments at ages 1, 5, 10 and 16. At each visit researchers screened the mother for signs of depression and used cognitive(认知的)development tests on the child. They also asked questions to assess the home life, characterizing the level of engagement(密切联系)between the mother and child.

Researchers found that signs of depression in moms when the child is one are associated with lower scores on cognitive function tests for the child at age 16. “We found that mothers who were highly depressed didn't invest (投入)emotionally or in providing learning materials to support their child, such as toys and books, as much as mothers who were not depressed. This, in turn, impacted the child's IQ at ages 5, 10 and 16,\" Patricia East, PhD, research scientist with the Department of Pediatrics at UC San Diego School of Medicine and one of the lead authors on the study, said in a statement.

The authors found the relationship in reverse to be true, as well—lower development scores early in the childlife promoted less engagement from mom and that only increased signs of maternal (母 亲的)depression as the child entered into adolescence.

Children who had severely depressed mothers were found to have an average verbal IQ score of 7. 30 compared to a score of 7. 78 in children without depressed mothers.

Although seemingly small, differences in IQ from 7. 78 to 7. 30 are highly meaningful in terms of children's verbal skills and vocabulary, said East. \"Our study results show the long-term consequences that a child can experience due to long-term maternal depression.\"

However, the authors recognize these families in Chile can be very different from mothers and children of other cultural backgrounds or nationalities. Besides, all the families studied were from a similar cultural background and socioeconomic status and had a similar level of education. 32. What did the researchers do in the study?

A. They screened the child for signs of depression. B. They tested the cognitive abilities of the mother. C. They evaluated the mother-child pairs' relationship. D. They ignored the mother's educational background. 33. What conclusion did the researchers draw?

A. A kid's IQ scores were decided by the mother's. B. A kid's IQ scores were different at different ages.

C. Depressed mothers gave birth to kids with low IQ scores. D. Mothers' depression might negatively impact their kids' IQ.

34. The underlined part “the relationship in reverse to be true\" in Paragraph 3 probably means.

A. a mother's depression might lead to her kid's depression B. a kid's lower IQ prevented him from succeeding at school C. a mother's depression prevented her engagement with her kid D. an adolescent with lower IQ worsened the mother's depression 35. What might be the author's attitude towards the results of the study?

A. They don't sound controversial. B. They may encourage public debate. C. They may not be very representative. D. They have been confirmed in a large scale. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,共12. 5分)

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两 项为多余选项。 Mummy's boys are less likely to suffer from poor mental health or unpopularity at school, research suggests. 36 They enjoy a similar lift in their self-esteem and confidence. The study by the Marriage Foundation concluded that boys and girls who are close to their parent of the opposite sex do better at dealing with teenage life. Boys who are “extremely close\" to their mothers at 14 are 41 percent less likely to have mental health problems, the research found. 37 While boys are happier when their parents are married, girls are more reassured by their parents having a high-quality relationship.

The analysis uses Millennium Cohort Study data from 11,000 mothers. 38 Harry Benson, research director of Marriage Foundation who co-authored the study with Professor Steve McKay from the University of Lincoln, said: \"Our analysis shows once again that family breakdown remains the number one driver of teenage mental health problems. 39 Boys who are close to their mum tend to have better mental health, as do girls who are close to their dad.”

Sir Paul Coleridge, chairman of Marriage Foundation, said: \"Mummy's boys and daddy's girls have been known about for generations as something of a joke. 40 Girls and boys, as they develop, do indeed have different emotional needs and expectations and do best when these needs are satisfied. A strong relationship with the parent of the opposite sex boosts self-esteem and peer group relationship skills-both of which support sound mental health. ”

A. Mummy's boys are popular at school. B. And the same is true for daddy's girls.

C. But it seems that research supports practical experience once again.

D. It found that the biggest factor affecting teenage mental health was family breakdown. E. And girls close to their fathers are 44 percent less likely to suffer emotional problems. F. Children have a better chance of maintaining a strong relationship with both parents.

G. Our really interesting new finding is that boys and girls are especially influenced by their relationship with the opposite sex parent.

I was doing a big clean-up recently and my kids were helping when my son, Freddo, came across a knotted handkerchief with an old dark brown coin inside. “Mom, can I have this? Can I play with this coin?” he asked. I took one look and was immediately transported to another time.

In 1991, there was a time when my friend and I worked in an African country, Niger, hit by sandstorms and burning heat. There were many things I found difficult about this place---the climate and beggars were my biggest headaches. So after finishing five months of nursing work there, we moved on to work at a health clinic in a neighboring country, Burkina Faso. \"It's much greener in Burkina. Even the Coke tastes better,\" the locals assured us.

Yet the fact was quite the opposite. Arriving by taxi at our destination in Burkina, we began to unload. I was reaching for my larger piece of luggage when, out of the darkness, a motorbike with two men approached slowly. Without warning, one of them grabbed my daypack as the motorbike swept close by. Within seconds, the pair were

Dear Carl, Yours, Li Hua out of sight, swallowed up by the night.

With my passport, money, traveler's checks all in the bag, I was in deep trouble. How frustrating! All I wanted was to leave this place! Then, walking through Burkina's streets one day, I was stopped by an old woman who thrust(猛推)her hand in my face. “Cadeau ('gift' in French)! Cadeau!” she cried. I'd had enough! I was extremely tired of the country: its poverty, its thieves, the heat, the dust and... everything! I told her angrily and firmly in French, “I have no 'cadeau'. I have no money. A thief stole all my money two weeks ago and now I can't get out of your country. I cannot give you anything. NOTHING!” The beggar woman listened attentively. To my great surprise, after hearing my words, she gave a broad smile. 注意:

1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式作答。
