Personality is no a large extent internet¬¬—A-type parents usually bring about A-type children. But the environment must also have a great effect. If competition is important to parent, it is likely to become a major factor in the lives of their children, too.

One place where children get A-type characteristics is school, which is a high competitive institution. Too many schools encourage their students to “win at all cost” and measure their success by achievement of this goal. This produces a two-layer system, in which A-type seems in some way better than B-type. But being too eager to win can have dangerous results.

Until now, the worst form of competition in school is the too much attention to examinations. It is a rare school that allows students to concentrate on those things they do well. The advantages of competition by examinations are somewhat questionable, but competition in the certain knowledge of failure is positively harmful. Obviously , it is not good that all A-type students change into B-types. The world need different types and schools have an important duty to fit a child’s personality to his possible future employment.

Perhaps selection for the caring professions, especially medicine, could be made less by good grades in chemistry and more by such considerations as warm heart and sympathy. It is surely mistaken to choose our doctors only from A-type students. B-type students are important and could be encouraged.

Real policemen, both in Britain and the United states, hardly recognize any resemblance(相似) between their lives and what they see about themselves on TV.

The first difference is that a policeman’s real life revolves around the law. He has to know exactly what actions are crimes and what evidence can be used to prove them in court. He has to know nearly as much law as a professional lawyer.

Most crime dramas on television are about finding the criminal. As soon as he is arrested, the story is over. In real life, finding criminals is seldom much of a problem, except in very serious cases like murders and terrorist attack—where failure to produce results will affect the reputation of the police—little effort is spent on searching. The police have elaborate machinery, which eventually shows up the most wanted men. After having made an arrest, a detective really starts to work. In order to prove the criminal’s case in court he often has to spend a lot of time gathering evidence. There is a third big difference between the drama detective and the real one. The real detective comes up against an unpleasant moral problem resulting from two opposite pressures: first as members of a police force they always leave to behave in an absolute lawful way; secondly, as expensive public servants they have to get results. They can hardly ever do both. Most of the time some of them have to break rules in small ways.

16 It is essential for a policeman to be trained in the criminal law so that he can__________. A. arrest criminals in the street B. justify his arrests in court

C. know as much law as a professional lawyer

18 “The most wanted men” refers to__________. A. the most dangerous criminals B. most of the witnesses wanted C. those the police are searching for

D. the men the police are most interested in arresting

19 The real detective faces an unpleasant moral problems because he_______. A. is an expensive public servant B. often feels rather depressed

C. has to break the law in order to preserve it D. must always behave with absolute legality

20 According to this passage, which of the following statements is true? A. In real life, finding criminals is one of the policemen’s greatest problems. B. The detective’s work is over once the arrest has been done.

C. The police spend a great deal of time finding evidence to support their arrests. D. The police devote most of their working life tosearching for criminals. 二、阅读(三)

Cars play an important part of life in the United States. Without a car most people feel that they are poor. And even if a person is poor, he doesn’t feel really poor when he has a car.

Henry Ford was the man who first started making cars in large numbers. Maybe, he didn’t know how much the car was going to affect American culture. The cars made the United States a country one wheels. And it helped to make the United States what it is today.

There are three main reasons that the car has become so popular in the United States today. First of all the country is a huge one and Americans like to move around in it. The car provides the most comfortable and cheapest form of transportation. With a car people can go to any place without spending a lot of money.

The second reason cars are popular is the fact that the United States never really developed an efficient and inexpensive form of public transportation. Long-distance trains have never been as common in the United States as they are in other parts of the world. Nowadays there is a good system of air-service provided by planes. But it is too expensive to be used frequently.

The third reason is the most important one, though. The American spirit of independence is what really made cars popular. Americans don’t like to wait for a bus, or a train or even a plane. They don’t like to have to follow an exact schedule. A car gives them the freedom to schedule their own time. And this is the freedom that Americans want most to have.

The gas shortage has caused a big problem for Americans. But the resolution will not be a bigger system of public transportation. The real solution will have to be a new kind of car, one that does not use so much gas.
