Disappointed and upset, Tom found his money box empty. The coins lying on the bed added up to ﹩36.22. But the bike he wanted cost ﹩88. Where and how could he get the rest of money? He knew his fellows all had bikes, without which he couldn't hang around with them on weekends. He thought about asking his parents for money, but soon gave up because he knew it wouldn't happen.
Earning money seemed to be the only way. So he had to find a job first. He decided turn to Mr Jackie for advice, who usually had opinions in most things. \"well, you can start right here, the floor needs cleaning and my car needs washing.\" Then Tom's part﹣time jobs began. For two months he worked every day after finishing his homework. He was surprised by a variety of jobs people found for him to do. He could hardly remember how many cars he had washed and how many windows he had cleaned, but he knew his dream would soon come true because the money kept increasing. The day finally came when he counted all the money he earned and found nearly 100 dollars. He couldn't wait to go down to the shop to buy his dream bike.
It was by hard work that he bought the bike he had been dreaming of. So he cherished it very much. He had achieved what he thought was impossible, and

\"Thief!\"

I dashed upstairs. Sure enough, as expected, a boy of about 12 years old was petting my violin. The boy had messy hair and a thin face, his oversized coat seemingly filled with something. At first glance, I found a new pair of shoes missing. It seemed that he was surely a thief.
Then, I saw his eyes full of fear and despair. My anger was immediately replaced by a smile. I asked, \"Are you Mr. Ram's nephew, Michael? I'm his housekeeper. Two days ago, I heard his nephew living in the countryside will come. It must be you. You're really like him!\"
On hearing my words, the boy was first astonished, but then quickly said, \"Has my uncle gone out? I think I'd better first go out for a walk and visit him again in a while.\"
I nodded and asked the boy who was preparing to put down the violin, \"Do you like to play the violin so much?\"
\"Yes, but I'm so poor that I can't afford it.\" the boy replied.
\"Then, I give this violin to you.\" The boy looked at me questioningly, but he picked up the violin. Going out to the living room, he suddenly saw on the wall a huge color photo of me playing the violin in the Sydney Opera House. He involuntarily trembled for a moment and ran out without looking back.
I was sure that the boy had understood what happened because no one would

When Lisa was a little girl, she learned an important lesson from her father. Her father told her that when facing a problem, she should never give up. Instead she should try another solution. In the following years, Lisa always remembered her father's words.
When Lisa was little, she dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. It was always her dream. But it was not an easy road. After leaving college, Lisa went to Paris with her designs in order to make her dream come true. In Paris, she tried to talk to famous designers and show them some of her designs, but none of them showed any interest.
第4页(共73页)
Though Lisa was discouraged, she didn't give up. One day, at a friend's party, she was introduced to a young lady who was dressed in a beautiful knitted(编织的) sweater. It wasn't a fancy color, but it did have very special stitches(针法). Lisa asked that lady if she knitted it herself. She said it was a work of a lady in Paris.
Lisa really loved the special stitches and wanted to include them in her designs. And then Lisa had an even braver idea. \"Why not own a fashion store of my own? That way, I could design, make and sell my own clothes,\" she thought. So she decided to begin with that kind of sweaters.
Lisa's friend introduced her to Madam Dean who knitted that sweater. The lady was from Armenia and she learned to knit that kind of sweater from people in her country.
Lisa drew a picture of a sweater and asked Madam Dean to knit the sweater for her. Madam Dean agreed. One week later, Lisa got the sweater. The following day after Lisa received it, she wore it to a party in the fashion industry.
Lisa was very nervous but she was lucky. Not long after the party began, her sweater drew the attention of a store owner from New York. She wanted to order 40 such sweaters in two weeks. Lisa was really happy and accepted the order.

Early in the morning I went to the ocean beach to play my guitar. The usually crowded beach was deserted except for two people. On one side of the boardwalk (木板人行道) was a woman who was cleaning the beach with a broom; on the other side was a lone figure sitting and staring to sea. I chose a spot between them and began to play.
As I played, the woman with the broom swept her way right next to me. She stopped sweeping and leaned on her broom, smiling at me. She appeared to be homeless with dirty mismatched clothes.
\"You sure play beautiful music.\" she said. \"I think my friend would like you music. I want to hire you to play for her.\" She pointed to the lone figure staring out at the ocean, then produced a few coins from her pocket. \"I don't have much, and I know you're worth a lot, but if I give this to you, will you play a song for her? She's going through a lot. I know the music will make her feel better.\"

I told her I'd be happy to play for free.
As we walked over to her friend, the Broom Lady told me that her friend had not talked for weeks. We approached, and the Broom Lady introduced me, \"Annie, I got you a present to cheer you up. It's a guitar man who is going to play a song specially for you.\"
Annie didn't move. She was wearing dark sunglasses and had an old coat pulled up to cover most of her face.
I sat next to Annie and played. As I played I put every thought into having good things happen for this woman. I played for quite a while.

After a week, the portrait was done. The rich man came to take the painting as scheduled. At this moment, the rich man hit on an evil idea of bullying the unknown young artist, so he refused to pay 1, 000 dollars. He thought, \"The man in the painting is me. If I don't buy this painting, no one will buy it. Why should I pay so much money for it?\" So the rich man said, \"I will only pay 300 dollars.\"
The young painter was astonished, for he had never come across such things. He strongly stood his ground, expecting the rich man to keep the agreement and to be a trustworthy man.
\"I can only pay 300 dollars to buy the painting. Speak no more.\" The rich man thought he would win for sure, \"I ask you at last, will you sell it 300 dollars or not?\"

9.Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station (加油站) about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register (收银台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's. We chatted on the way to the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.

Boys like to be considered to be brave, but what kind of things can be considered to be brave? It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by the actual deed. A boy with the name Henry gave us a good example. Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school,

they saw some people fighting in the street corner. Ronny said excitedly, \"Some people are fighting! Let's go and have a look!\" But Henry refused, \"It's none of our business. We'd better go home and don't get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me.\"
\"You are a coward, and afraid to go,\" said Ronny, and off he ran to the spot with some other boys. Henry had to go home alone and didn't think about it anymore.
But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn't want to play with him.
Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Ronny for his rude behavior, because he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys' laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as well. However, Ronny didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had his new friends who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.

His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. \"The day starts at dawn on my farm,\" he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze(吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn't going to take a horse ride by

After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. The day of the balloon festival, I felt as light as a hot﹣air balloon. This year I wouldn't just be watching. I'd be riding in Mr. J's truck, following the flight of the balloon and meeting it when it came down.
It was a perfect day. Dad and I drove down the road, looped(环状绕行) the lake, and turned into the field that was being used as a parking area. Dad pointed to the lake. \"That's where you are to find the crew,\" he said.

My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment.
She ran a small shop at a flea market and collected old clothes and some other things to sell for the money we needed. Once during elementary school, it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed and wondered how could she do this to me? I threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school, my schoolmates asked me, \"Your mom only has one eye?\" and laughed at me.
I was so angry with my mom and wished that she would just disappear from this world. So I said to my mom, \"Why don't you have the other eye? You're only gonna make me a joke!\" My mom trembled with shock, and said in an apologetic tone, \"I'm so sorry that I only have one eye, and I was an embarrassment for you. But I was so proud of my son to see a whole new world for me with that eye. I will leave right now. Sorry!\" My mom turned around and staggered away.
For the words I had said to her earlier, there was something biting at me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my one﹣eyed mom and our desperate poverty. Maybe because my mom hadn't punished me, I didn't think I had hurt her feelings very badly.
I told myself that I would become successful in the near future, so I studied very hard. Later I got accepted by the Seoul University. I left my mother and came to Seoul to study. I never went back to visit my mom.

Then I got married there. I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now I am living happily as a successful man. I enjoy the life in Seoul because it's a place that doesn't remind me of my mom and my past. This kind of happiness was getting bigger and bigger, until one day someone knocked at my door.

18.As he lay awake that night, Tony could hear his parents discussing his sister Alice's birthday. It was just two days away. Birthdays were always a lot of fun, even though there was no money for store﹣bought gifts. Nearly all of toys he and his sister had were homemade. There was nothing wrong with that, he knew. Like many families in this part, they were poor.
This birthday would be different, though. Alice was older now, and he'd seen how her eyes lit up when she saw the new doll at Honey House, a neighborhood store just down the road from their house.
How he longed for her to have it! An idea finally came to him just before he went to bed. After a quick breakfast the following morning, he placed a tin can and a piece of string in a large bag. Then he tied the bag to the handlebars of his

bike and headed toward a village hill.
After a long journey, he reached his destination, the mango forest. There were already two other boys there. Tony grabbed his bag and set to work immediately. The smaller trees had already been picked over pretty well, but he was able to find a half﹣dozen mangoes before noon.
When the sun was high overhead, the hard work began. Nearly all of the taller trees held ripe mangoes but they were well beyond reach. The other boys took their fruit and went away. Tony used his pocket knife to cut a long piece of bamboo. Then he took the tin can from the bag, tied it to one end of the bamboo stick, and walked over to the base of mango tree.
He stayed there, holding the tin can high up into the tree. His efforts were occasionally rewarded when a mango dropped into the can. After a while his neck ached from looking upward, and his arms grew sore. He kept at it, though, and by late afternoon his bag was nearly full.

I knew I was not supposed to be quite so excited. I was too old for that. At age eleven, the oldest and my mom's \"grown up\" girl, I had to keep my cool. I was in middle school after all. But every chance I got, when I was alone, I checked each present under the tree. I read every tag and felt every package, guessing at the contents within. I had examined each gift so often that I could tell which present went to which person without even looking at the tags.
It had been a tough year for my family. Whenever my mom looked over at the tree and scattered(撒) presents, she would sigh and warn us, \"There won't be as much for Christmas this year. Try not to be disappointed.\" Christmas had traditionally been a time for my parents to spoil us. In years past, the presents would pile up and spill out from under the tree, taking over the living room. I had heard the phrase \"giving is better than receiving,\" but thought that whoever had said that must have been out of their mind. Getting presents was the whole point! It was the reason I couldn't get to sleep on Christmas Eve.
第30页(共73页)
On Christmas morning, we eagerly waited in the hallway until Dad told us everything was ready. We rushed into the living room and let the wrapping paper fly. We made weak attempts to wait and watch while other family members opened their presents, but as the time passed we lost our self﹣control.
\"Here's another one for you,\" said Mom as she handed me a package. I looked at it, confused. Having spent so much time examining the presents before Christmas. I recognized this one. But it had not been mine. It was my mom's. A new label had been put on it, with my name written in my mother's handwriting.

20.\"Little boy, will you help an old man up the hill with his load?\" These words were spoken by an old gray﹣headed man, who was drawing a hand﹣cart with a bag of corn in it.

\"I can't; I am in a hurry,\" said Hanson, the boy addressed, who was hurrying to get to the schoolyard, that he might play with the boys before school began.
The old man sat down on a stone at the foot of the hill, to rest himself and gather strength for the ascent (上坡). He stared after Hanson, and sighed as he thought of the days of his youth, now far bark in the past. A tear was beginning to gather in his eye, when another little boy, John Wilson, came up to him and said, \"Shall I help you up the hill with your load?\"
The old man brushed his eyes with the sleeve of his coal, and replied, \"I shall be very glad to have your help.\" He then stood up, and taking the handle of his cart, pulled with all his strength, while John pushed behind.
When they reached the top of the hill, John discovered a hole in the bag on the under side, from which the com was dropping out; and, putting forth all his strength, he turned the bag, so that there might be no further loss of corn.
\"Thank you very much,\" said the old man, as John set out upon a run for his school﹣house; \"and may God reward you.\" But John was out of hearing before the last words were spoken.
When John reached the school﹣house, he was about ten minute too late; for which he received a mark(违纪记录). This was a very unusual thing for him, as he was remarkable for never being late. If he had told the headmaster what 第32页(共73页)

She couldn't help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not even possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle﹣aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.

\"Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!\" said Jenny as she wiped her tears, \"Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!!\"
Hearing the words, the seller smiled \"Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?\"
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered mother's familiar face and weathered hands. \"Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.\"

Two score years ago, deep in a forest some researchers were struggling to study the rarest creature in the world. No one had ever seen it, and its existence was only known by some remains, and by its highly characteristic call. The call was similar to that of a dog with a toothache.
Everyone expected to be the first to photograph and study it. The ‘beast' was a nocturnal(夜间活跃的) beast, so during the day the scientists would pass their time making a study of other matters or in discussion. The most remarkable of them was Sir Walter Tick﹣Fondler. He was a very pleasant and reliable man, with a tiny little moustache and a huge explorer's hat. Every day, before tea, he would spend an hour sitting at his desk, putting all his equipment and bits and pieces in their proper place. He did this with exactprecision(精确度). The notebook went right at the far edge of the desk, on the right hand side, slightly

beyond the recorder, and next to the five pencils which were always in the same order: black, red, blue, green and yellow. The lamp was always towards the end of the desk, next to the camera, on the left…andso it waswithall his things, even with the smallest of details.
Everyone was amused that this gentleman was such a perfect example of the famous English obsession(痴迷) with order.
The researchers spent a great many nights in that area before the creature appeared, and before it did so some of them even doubted its existence. It, however, appeared suddenly, while everything was quiet.
Only a few metres away, the scientists heard its call loud and clear, the famous call of the dog with a toothache. It lasted only an instant, because all the sudden noisy confusion of the researchers scrabbling for their cameras and notebooks scared the creature, and it shot off before it could apparently be seen or studied in any detail.

\"Wanted: Violin. Can't pay much. Contact…\"
I rarely read the classified advertisements, so why did I notice that one? I laid the paper on my lap and closed my eyes, remembering what had happened many years before, during the Great Depression when my family struggled to make a living on our farm. I, too, had wanted a violin.
When my older twin sisters began showing an interest in music, Harriet Anne learned to play Grandma's piano, while Suzanne turned to Daddy's violin. Simple tunes became lovely melodies. My baby brother danced; Daddy hummed and Mother whistled. I just listened.
When my arms grew long enough, I tried to play Suzanne's violin. Oh, how I wanted one! But I knew it was out of the question.
One evening as the twins played in the school orchestra. I closed my eyes tight to capture the picture firmly in my mind. Some day, I'll sit up there, I vowed silently.
It was not a good year. At harvest the crops didn't bring as much as we had

hoped. Yet even though times were hard, I couldn't wait any longer to ask, \"Daddy, may I have a violin of my own?\"
\"Can't you use Suzanne's?\"
\"I'd like to be in the orchestra too, and we can't both use the same violin at the same time.\"
Daddy's face looked sad. That night, and many following nights, I heard him remind God in our family prayers, \"…and Lord, Mary Lou wants her own violin.\"
One evening we all sat round the table. The twins and I studied. Mother sewed and Daddy wrote a letter to his friend, George Finkle, in Columbus, Ohio. Mr Finkle, Daddy said, was a fine violinist.
When Daddy received a letter from Columbus a few weeks later, he asked me, \"Mary Lou, do you want to go with me to visit Mr Finkle?\"
He drove us to Columbus and we came to a fine, old house. A tall man opened the door. He and Daddy heartily shook hands, both talking at once.
\"Mary Lou, I've been hearing things about you. Your Daddy has arranged a surprise for you!\" He picked up a case, opened it, lifted out a violin and started to play. The melody surged and spoke like waterfalls. Oh, to play like him, I

thought.
Finishing the piece, he turned to Daddy. \"I found it in a pawnshop(当铺)for seven dollars. It's a good violin. Mary Lou should be able to make a beautiful music with it.\" Then he handed the violin to me.

On Wednesday night, it was the closing time of the mall. But there was an hour's work, at least, to get everything cleaned up. It would be 11:00 pm before I finally got home. I hadn't even had time to have dinner. I was starving. My feet ached. My whole body was filled with tiredness. I couldn't wait to go to bed. But it would be only 6 hours before the alarm went off at 5:00 am for my day job.

Things had been tight for over a year now. My husband Paul's business had taken a huge hit. I have a full﹣time job at a day care center and somehow do my homework for my college class too. Then I had to work nights at the mall. Without me taking my second job, there wouldn't be enough money to pay the bills. Let alone buy any Christmas presents for our 15﹣year﹣old daughter, Marie. No one wanted to wake up on Christmas morning to an empty tree.
I barely even saw Paul and Marie anymore. Marie was growing up, but a teenage girl still needs her mom. I worried about her, about us. Was she eating enough? Keeping up with her schoolwork? I wasn't afraid of sacrifices. Everyone was having to work hard for the family. I knew I was blessed to have two jobs, when millions of people couldn't find one.
How I hoped to quit my job at the day care center and obtain a full﹣time degree. I'd dropped down to one class a term. If I quit that, there was no way I'd find the willpower to try again. Besides, wasn't I always telling Marie to keep hoping and never give up?
My mind went back to the conversation I'd had with Marie earlier. Paul had dropped her off at the mall, where she was getting picked up for a babysitting job. \" Remember we're going Christmas shopping this night,\" she said. \" Now I'll even have my own money. See you later.\"

Not only did he have a loud voice, but Rigo liked to talk. He liked to talk a lot. Whenever he had time he would talk with his classmates, sharing everything he considered fan. He liked to yell and shout. Sometimes he just yelled, \"Hey!\" for no reason. He liked the sound of his very loud voice for he thought it had more penetrating (穿透的) power than that of an actor. But not everyone felt the

When Rigo shouted good﹣bye as he left for school, his mother shook her head. \"Rigo! Be quiet!\" When his father drove him to school, Rigo said, \"Hey! His father shook his head. \"Rigo, use a quiet voice in the car.\" At school, his teacher talked to him three times about using his quiet voice. His classmates shook their heads, throwing an upset look at him when he talked aloud.
Later, Rigo had to sit by himself for a while. His teacher wanted him to practice being quiet. Rigo had to sit quietly for five minutes. It felt like five hours or five days. When the five minutes were up, Rigo went to his desk and sat quietly. It was not easy.
After school, Rigo was waiting for his father. He saw Chris again. \"Hey!\" he yelled. \"Chris! Hey!\" The headmaster was walking by. Rigo was sure he was going to get in trouble for his loud voice. He looked quickly at the ground. Maybe the headmaster would keep walking.

One morning, Molly handed me two bags. One regular lunch paper bag, and the one with staples(订书机) and paperclips(回形针).
\"Why two bags?\" \"The other one is something else.\" \"What's in it?\" \"Just some stuff. Take it with you.\" I stuffed both bags into my briefcase(公文包), kissed the child and rushed off.
第54页(共73页)
At midday, while hurriedly swallowing down my real lunch, I tore open Molly's bag and shook out the contents. Two hair ribbons, three small stones, a plastic dinosaur, a pencil, a tiny seashell, a marble, a used lipstick, a small doll, two chocolate bars and 13 pennies.
I smiled. How charming! Rising to work, I swept the desk clean into the wastebasket﹣﹣﹣leftover lunch, Molly's junk and all. There wasn't anything in there I needed.
That evening Molly came to stand beside me while I was reading the paper. \"Where's my bag?\" \"What bag?\" \"You know, the one I gave you this morning.\" \"I left it at the office, why?\" \"I forgot to put this note in it.\" She handed over the note. \"Besides, I want it back.\" \"Why?\" \"Those are my things in the bag, Daddy, the ones I really like. I thought you might like to play with them, but now I want them back. You didn't lose the bag, did you, Daddy?\" Tears puddled in her eyes.
\"Oh,no, I just forgot to bring it home,\" I lied. \"Bring it tomorrow, okay?\"As she hugged my neck with relief, I unfolded the note that had not gotten into the bag: \"I love you, Daddy.\"
Oh. And uh﹣oh. I looked long at the face of my child. She had given me her treasures﹣all that a 7﹣year﹣old held dear. Love in a paper bag,and I had missed it﹣not only missed it, but had thrown it away because \"there wasn't anything in there I needed.\" It wasn't the first or the last time I felt ashamed

A Gift of Gold
It was the winter of 1937,just after Christmas. The Depression was still going on,but I was in good spirits.I was going to graduate from elementary school, but my mother still dressed me in shorts. Most of my classmates had given up wearing shorts. For the graduation ceremony, all the boys were expected to dress white shirts and dark﹣blue wool pants.
第56页(共73页)
I waited until a week before I told my mother. On a cold Monday afternoon I went home from school.
\"Mom,\"I said,\"about graduation…\"
\"Yes?\"she answered.
\"They are going to give me the first﹣prize medal,\"I said.
Still working over the stove, she looked over her shoulder at me and smiled broadly.\"That's wonderful,Babe.Dad and I will both be there, and we'll be the proudest in the place.\"
She must have seen by the look on my face that something was wrong. She turned her back and said,\"So?\"
\"So,I have to get long pants,\"I said.
\"Babe,we don't have the money for new pants right now,\"she said.
\"Okay,\"I burst out.\"Then I won't go to graduation.Plus,I'm running away from home!\"
\"If I were you,I wouldn't pack my bags.We'll solve the pants problem somehow,\"she said.

The following Saturday, when my mother said,\"Let's go shopping,\"I knew that she had solved the problem. Then we left home.We took the trolley and got off at Southern Boulevard, the best shopping street. Our clothing store was just a couple of blocks away.
But first we walked a short way down the Boulevard and stopped at a place I had never noticed before.
\"Wait here,\"she said. Then she opened the door with the hand with a gold wedding ring on her ring finger and entered a storefront that looked like a bank.
She went out about ten minutes later with a purse in her left hand, and then we went to the pants store.I chose a pair of pants. After a patient bargain with the seller,my mother bought it at the price of three dollars and fifty cents and handed it to me.

One evening,a workman was exhaustedly making his way home after work, when he stopped to rest by the side of the road. A woman came by,pushing a cart full of flowers. The smell of her blossoms so filled the air with sweetness that it seemed to take away the tiredness in his bones and lift his spirits. He had never experienced such wonder from the many blooms of his own garden. \"How much must I pay,or what must I do,to have some of your wonderful flowers?\"he asked the woman.
\"Oh,sir,\"she said,\"take what your wish for.\"
\"What return must I make for them?\"he asked again.
\"Your gratitude is enough,\"she said,\"and it's a pleasure to share the beauty of flowers with you.\"
So the man filled his arms with blossoms and hurried joyfully home. His wife and his children were also glad over the remarkable flowers, for they, too, discovered that the sight of them was a delight and the smell of them refreshed the soul.
In order not to lose his valuable possession, the man planted the blossoms in a small plot of land behind his house. Sunlight and water kept them amazingly beautiful﹣they still performed their fantastic magic.
第59页(共73页)
Every day,his children took delight in playing in the yard and always sang and danced around the flowers. They all liked the lovely gift their father had received and even invited many of their friends to share this fantastic magic together. When children came to play near the flowers, the man over and over warned them against carelessness and wild play for fear that they walk on the flowers and damage them. But the flowers remained strong as long as there was enough sun and water to nourish(滋养)them. Nowhere else could the man or his wife or children find such remarkable relaxation from tiredness, such comfort in sadness, such spiritual nourishment as those remarkable flowers provided.
With the news spreading and more people coming to appreciate his treasure, the man became even more concerned about his remarkable flowers.

When Ryan first turned up for Ms. Rose's class, he was kind of nervous because he'd heard Ms. Rose could be a real monster sometimes. But as Ms. Rose started with an overview of what they'd be doing during the year in a pleasant voice, she looked nice enough. Then with a more serious one, she warned the students that she'd be giving them homework assignments, which were not to be handed in late, and they were to be completed fully. \"No excuse! No extensions!\"
That day she assigned the class its first homework. They had to do a sheet of math problems and read a short story. It wasn't due until Thursday, but she suggested they do it immediately that night. \"Homework has a way of piling up.\" she said, her eyes narrowing slightly. But today was only Monday! There was plenty of time, Ryan thought.
So when school was over, Ryan and his friends ran off to play baseball. Exhausted after the game, he entertained himself with his favorite TV show, leaving his homework aside on his desk. Days passed quickly, Ryan was free of worries most of the time, while Ms. Rose just occasionally reminded them of the deadline, and that she wouldn't tolerate anyone not having done it.
Wednesday, after dinner, he suddenly realized that his homework was due next day. He raced to his desk and was greeted with the most curious thing. The pile of homework really had grown taller. Oh no! What was he going to do? It looked as if the papers had towered over him, almost soaring up to the ceiling.
第61页(共73页)
He really needed to get started. He did a little bit here and there, but he kept distracted by other work waiting for him. Finally, he couldn't even locate the homework he'd started with. Frustrated, he gave up and went to bed. Ryan tossed and turned all night and had dreams of paper mountains burying him alive.
The next morning, when Ryan entered the classroom, he found Ms. Rose waiting, her faced dark with rage. Obviously, Ryan wasn't the only one who suffered from the mysteriously growing assignments.

paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks(盯着他们).
One day, Jatin took Neha's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn't until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Neha agreed and the two decided to share Jatin's running shoes. Neha's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Jatin. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Jatin often arrived late and was warned by the school.
A long distance race was going to be held for the boys in the city. When Jatin learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Jatin had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Neha and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞) with Jatin from behind and Jatin crashed to the ground.

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. lf we didn't see some rain soon we would lose everything.
I was in the kitchen making lunch for the family when I saw my six﹣year old son,Billy, walking toward the woods. I could only see his back. He wasn't walking in his usual way. He was obviously walking with a great effort, trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house.
Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow purposeful long step toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey.
第64页(共73页)
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked; being very careful not to spill the water he carried. Branches and thorns slapped(拍打) his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He had a much greater purpose. As I leaned in to spy on him, I saw the most amazing site.
Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him. But Billy walked right up to them. I almost screamed for him to get away. And I saw a baby deer laying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water and heat exhaustion, life its head with great effort to lap(舔)up the water in my beautiful boy's hand.

39.It was a Saturday afternoon. The color of the sky was changing, first light gray, then dark gray, and finally dark and dense. The wind was blowing heavily, and the trees were swaying in the strong wind. It began to rain cats and dogs. Soon, the road was filled with puddles from the rain.
On such a stormy afternoon, my mother took my five﹣year﹣old brother,

Christopher, and me to a new big toy store she had read about in the newspaper. \"So many toys,\" the advertisement had shouted in full and flashy color, \"that we had to get a huge warehouse to fit them all!\"
Christopher and I couldn't have been more excited. We ran across the parking lot, through the cold and biting rain, as fast as our little legs could carry us. We left our mother outside to battle with the frustrating umbrella, which never worked when she wanted it to. \"Christine! Take care of your young brother!\" Mother shouted at the top of her voice.
\"Christine! I'm going to find the Lego section (乐高积木区)! There's a new pirate ship I want, and I have four dollars! Maybe I can buy it!\" Christopher exclaimed and ran off excitedly. I only half heard him. I took a right turn and, to my wide﹣eyed delight, found myself in the midst of the Barbie (芭比) World.
I was studying a Barbie and doing some simple math in my head when suddenly an earthshaking clap of thunder roared from the storm outside. I jumped at the noise, dropping the doll to the floor. The lights flickered (闪烁) once and died, covering everything in a blanket of blackness. Thunder continued to shake the sky and lightning illuminated the store for seconds, casting frightening shadows on my mind.

40.Megan is a bright and curious little girl, as are most children of eight years old. When walking she looks up, down, or sideways, never where she's going. One day, she spotted, partly covered by leaves and litter, a﹩100 bill. She looked to see if anyone was watching and bent down to crumple (揉捏) the bill in her tiny hand. Sliding it into her jacket pocket, she took another guilty look around and then hurried off to school.
Her day was spent watching her jacket hung on the wall by the door. During lunch, she took it off and ran to the far side of the playground to pull out the crumpled bill and stare at it and see that it was real and now belonged to her. When some older kids wandered by, she put it back into her pocket quickly and rushed back into the school.
It wasn't until she was riding home on the school bus that she started to wonder about who the bill had belonged to before it came to be hers. \"Probably somebody rich\", she thought. \"Why else would they be so careless with﹩100 bills?\"
She imagined a tall man in a fine wool jacket walking to his big car and pulling

out a roll of money, not noticing as one bill drifted(飘落) to the ground. Putting the roll back in his pocket, he climbed into his car and drove away. Just then, a wind blew some leaves to cover most of the lost bill.
But, then she thought, what if the bill had been a present for his little niece living with her grandma because her parents were killed in a car crash. She'd have treasured that﹩100 because it came from her generous uncle. And she'd be dreaming, even now if she hadn't realized she'd lost it, of all the toys and treats that the bill could buy. She could use it to buy a present for her grandmother. She would be heartbroken to find she'd lost that﹩100.
